To EBay, or to buy new from dealer...?

Long story short...FedEx lost my ECU in transit to having it reflashed. Story, story, story...waiting on them, to see if my claim will be approved or denied for the total cost to replace the ECU. But I'm not holding my breath in hopes they'll cover what they lost.
So,...should I risk going used via eBay or just bite the bullet and buy new if the claim is denied?

What's the benefit of buying new? I see no reason to pay dealer prices if you don't have to.

Buyin used:
Pros = cheaper
Cons = gambling on quality/functionality, can't return once installed, no warranty
Buying new:
Pros = warranty, returnable, customer service available, guaranteed the mapping is 100% factory
Cons = expensive as hell

I wonder, depending on bike, if you would have to get ECU reflashed for an immobilizer/security to your ignition key. Another cost to add to used ECU. For a daily use bike I would buy from dealer. If bike is gonna get modified and need an ECU flash anyway I would get used.

I’d keep on fed ex to see if it pops up.
They have to know where it was last before it went MIA.
On the other hand how old is the bike?

UPS lost a fork I bought once. Actually it was a pair. One arrived, one did not. The box had a huge hole and looked like it had been wrestled by a gorilla. I eventually got them to pay for another fork leg, but it took some calls.

They delivered to the wrong address. They've done 3 attempts for 3 days to that location in an attempt to retreive package with no luck.

It'll be flashed anyways...just very cautious of buying used electronic equipment since I've been burned in the past.

UPS is such a better company. Their drivers are considered contractors from my understanding. So I think their company structure is totally different especially when it comes to liability issues.

Not saying you're wrong, but are you sure? Given UPS has a reputation as a union company, I'd be surprised if their drivers were somehow separate from that as independent contractors.

OP, given that used ECUs for your bike are going for $200-250 used with eBay guarantee, vs. $850 new, it's an easy financial decision if buying yourself. Are you asking which way to go if FedEx is reimbursing you?

Edit: re-read original post. I personally wouldn't sweat buying a used ECU. I've done it and had no issues.

Fedex drivers are employees of contract delivery services. UPS drivers are employees of UPS.

I guess I'm not familiar with eBay guarantee. All sellers have a 0 return policy for their ECU once installed....maybe I need to read more into it.
Sorry,...below was my point I poorly tried to make. I didn't make that clear.
UPS is better because they are union and NOT classified as contractors like FedEx drivers.

Why are you trying to buy 2nd hand/used if FedEx will be paying for it is my question?

I would first clarify if FedEx will be paying for it or not

I'm still waiting on the outcome to see if they even will cover it. Again, since I doubt they will, I'm researching now and figuring out which would be the best option if FedEx denies my claim.
Oh believe me,...I'll be firm in my case as to why they should 100% cover the replacement cost but am preparing myself for them not accepting responsibility.

How much did you insure it for? If not for $850, then ebay is the way to go. You might try looking on some of the Fj forum classified sections too.

Didn't think of it to be honest. I used our corporate account through work (reimbursed them of course for the shipping)where we ship items/components that are more than 5 times the worth of an ECU without issue.

ECU failures are uncommon these days. the only failure ive heard of in the past 5yrs was during development of a flash, which is not something ull come across. i wouldnt hesitate to buy used.

any non-factory settings will be overwritten by your flash. its also possible that any issues, however unlikely, will be overwritten and fixed by your flash.

on top of all that, sounds like u can buy 3 ECUs off eBay and still be saving $$ over new. theres no chance u can buy 3 busted ECUs off eBay.

Well here's a slight update.
Claim is now escalated, so we'll see if we have progress.
After speaking to Yamaha, the 2017 FJ-09 model ECU will only work for that bike. Previous years and similar models (even with the same engine) ECU's are not compatible. All dealers are out of stock, and so is the manufacturing back in Japan. Thus,...once an order is placed, it could take a few months for one to be made, shipped and delivered to the states. (Longer if this Covid-19 delays services etc.) Also, after speaking to an ECU flash tuner, an ECU from previous years or similar models with the same engine can not be re-mapped for the 2017.
So unless I wait until a 2017 ECU pops up somewhere, I'll still have to wait for Yamaha regardless of the outcome from the claim.
Lose, lose situation.....lesson learned I guess.

I drove for UPS one peak season and their drivers are employees. Supposedly they only hire full time drivers from within the company unless it's peak season. I have to say I really enjoyed working for UPS it's an amazing operation they are running. It so nice having a huge package car with actual shelves to sort the packages. It's crazy how many packages they deliver.

I know it doesn't pertain to your situation but I think one time I had a package delivered to me and the contents were damaged (headgasket kit). What wound up happening was we filed a claim and it was denied because the packaging was not good enough. So there is some investigation that has to be done before you'll get your claim. Goodluck.

See below...I misspoke. I do believe that UPS is by far a better company.
