Time for a new router

What's the hot tip you tech gurus?

- Wireless, with >3 ports for wired connections
- Typically 2 users at a time on phones, iPads or cabled computers
- Heaviest data use is streaming Netflix/others via WiFi (too far to cable from router)
- Currently using Linksys WRT1900 early version (5 yr old), does 2.4 and 5, works well but showing signs it's time.
(Had great luck with this brand over the last decade or so.)

I know there's new stuff coming, but I don't need bleeding edge/bells & whistles, no devices are currently Wifi 6 able. Looking for just rock solid connections with good bandwidth, 2000sf home, getting about 120m down from the modem.

Wait or jump- what models? TIA.

And I want one that can block specific sites like youtube and steam, and set time limits. Mine's supposed to be able to do that by using port blocking but it doesn't work.

"Showing signs it's time" ... how so? The problem may be elsewhere.

For a long time I was using some cheaper hardware from folks like TP-Link - trying to avoid spending more that $100 oh a router. That company in particularly would really push up against the limitations of the radios that were in the hardware, and after a year or two, signal strength REALLY started dropping off, badly.

Anyhow the last time I went through that, I switched over to Amplifi hardware - it's the home version of the networking hardware by Ubiquiti networks, which is enterprise-grade networking hardware. really good stuff. I have their central mesh router and just a single extender, and the performance is worlds better than anything I've used before.

The configuration is a little bit too plug-and-play friendly for a grognard like me who prefers the UI of a router look like a space shuttle, but it works, and works well. It is a little more pricey, my setup was around $250, but I also have 5ghz coverage for my entire house. Worth it.

There is a deadzone in one corner of my basement. Probably because the extender is trying to beam through a brick chimney to reach there. oh well.

I'm not asking what you are doing with your laptop in a deserted corner of your basement. Nope, ain't happening.

It's where my breaker box is. I'm in the middle of documenting labeling every receptacle and light switch in my house with its corresponding breaker, and also labeling the breaker. I'm using some cloud services to do some additional documentation on the back end, and sometimes when I'm in front of the box I can't pull them up. wander 10 feet over, and it's fine.

It is where I was originally planning to set up my laser cutter, and knowing what I know now I'm glad I didn't.

I got the new Asus RT-AC5300 router when my old one died. It's the new alien looking one and it handles about 30 wifi connections with no issue. you can also set up a VPN on it for all your devices to use. I went with Asus as they have the least amount of bug reports and are very responsive when new ones come out. I ditched Netgear because they hadn't fixed issues from years ago.

Woah- that's serious oversplaining if ever I've seen it...

ive been pretty happy with my ASUS RT-AC86U for the past 3 months. it does a good job of managing which antenna a device should connect to. range is increased over my prev D-Link. and i havent had to reset it once.
