Tibial Plateau Fracture

I didn't do it on the bike, but I don't think that's a prerequisite for posting here. :teeth

I was playing tag with my dog in the back yard. He went to the right to run through the ivy. I darted left to cut him off when he emerged from the other side. I noticed I was about to step on some branch cutters so I rotated my foot at the ankle to try to avoid stepping on them. My foot was rotated ~15° clockwise to my body's general direction of travel. As I moved through the stride I heard the 'pop' and slid to a stop on my deck. Friday night I got x-rays, drugs and an ortho referral after 3.5 hours in the ER.

Saw the ortho today. Looks like my femur drove a part of my tibia down 2 cm. He wants a CT for more detail, but he's already scheduled me for surgery next Tuesday the 29th. A hockey stick shaped plate, a couple screws and a synthetic bone graft is the current plan.

One month of zero weight bearing. Another of 50% weight bearing. A third month working up to full weight bearing... and then I can go back to work. It seems my employers are very accommodating, but I still worry about being away that long and also how I'm going to keep myself from getting bored at home during my recovery. I guess I could get everyone in the sink (and here) sick of seeing my screen name all over :laughing

Maybe now I can make the Sink get together at Sonoma instead of doing my business trip to Chicago.

Aw, man....I'm sorry to hear this. I just had a tragic ice-skating incident which sidelined me (so far) for 6 weeks with potential months of recovery after a postponed surgery. I'm waiting until the rainy season to get fixed since I bought a new bike. :laughing

As long as I can deal with the pain I'll be on two wheels. :ride

It's amazing how dangerous life is off two-wheels! Heal-up fast and do what they tell you to do.

if i had such a hurt i would make sure it was done at work on the clock.

better pay while down and out.

and i get to stay on medical, and get my job back.
unlike getting hurt at home. :afm199

yes i would lose my job having to be off work for more than a couple months. :thumbdown

get better and enjoy the pills. but not too much

What a difference 24 hours makes. I had my surgery Tuesday afternoon. I got almost no sleep Tuesday night between the pain and vitals checks and all the other stuff hospitals do that keep you from sleeping any respectable length of time.
I was determined to get out of there Wednesday, so I put on my game face and told the nurses I was at a pain level 4 pretty consistent when I was in fact fluctuating between 5 and 6 depending on where in the med cycle I was. After I dazzled the Occ.Therapists with my crutch work, they let me out and I came home.
Valium is a weird drug, for dreams anyway. I've been home a little under 24 hours, and feel a lot better than when I was in the hospital. Pain's at a 3 max.
The dog that "caused" all this is laying on the side of the bed, right where I need to put my feet to get out of bed. If I got comfortable to take a nap, he'd probably jump up on the bed, lay down on my "good" side and rest his head on my chest.
I don't have a copy of it yet, but the doctor showed me a before x ray from the surgery. I didn't break the end off my tibia like I thought I did. I shoved a piece out of the middle of my tibial plateau down and a small piece on the end stayed in place. Now there's a plate, 3 screws 2 pins and some wire holding it all together. Kinda stings just looking at it, going to stop now. :laughing
