Thunderhill East / West ?

I am looking in to trackdays this year and noticed an option to sign up for Thunderhill East or West. I am familiar with the original T-hill, which is the high speed 15 turn kick-ass course, which is the east, right?

Can anyone elaborate on the new course?

This may help ya ;)

Also, I believe Z2 Track Days is the first track day provider to run the full course! This event, if the West track is done, is scheduled for June 14th and 15th weekend with the 15th being a VIP Women's day :ride

if the trackday is split in an only west configuration, would you happen to know how many turns? distance?

I believe Dysturbed Ryders will be the first bikes on the new course if done in time.June 2 open track day.The combined course will be 5 miles total.

This might be the event of the year. An open day on the full course before any of the big 3. Wow! And the price is super reasonable for the full course and 7 hours of open track, perfect for learning the new course.

I can't imagine running a 3 group trackday on a course with 4 minute lap times. It will be like this: Wait at track entry for 1 minute because there are 65 riders in your group and they are letting them out 8 at a time. Ride 3-4 laps before getting the checkered flag (knowing that it's going to take 3-4 minutes to get the track clear.) Go back to the pits and wait 40 minutes for your next chance to ride 3 or 4 laps. Sounds like fun! Not. Lance realized right away why that won't work and that's why he's running a 2-group day. Dysturbed is really knocking it out of the park with a 1 group day. Now let's just hope that the track is ready in time.

The Thunderhill facebook page has some new photos of some new pavement. Very exciting. I'm guessing the entire track will be paved by the end of this week. That's just a guess. And I hear they want to give the track 3 weeks to cure before it's open to the public. That puts us right around the middle of June. Maybe. I can't wait.

Correct, it will not be ready for our June 2nd Open Track day. We will have to wait until Sept 22nd to do the 5 mile course. Hope to see some of you guys on June 2nd and Sept 22nd. :thumbup

This is correct. Anyone who's ridden Road America can tell you how long it can take just to get the last rider off the track. One flag incident will pretty much destroy a 20 minute group session.

That depends on the crash, and the crew. I run Miller (full and perimeter) regularly, and only once has the crash eaten a whole session, and the poor SOB flew out. Granted, they do have roads, and gates throughout.

Sure, there will be hiccups, but you can't condemn a five mile track from the get go. As you well know the boys at T-hill have been at this a while.

We thought so too...until we did it that way for several years at RFR and the majority of folks didn't like it. Most riders are done after 20 minutes so only 2/3 of the way into the session and the track is empty; people felt like they were losing out on their track time when they came in early. Plus, on a long track like RFR or Thill East/West, 30-minutes breaks in between sessions weren't long enough for most people.

So, what might at first seem like the "best" way to do something isn't always true in reality. 30-minute sessions are awesome as are open events so it's great that riders have so many options. We're lucky to live where we do.

Definitely agree here. I did RFR only once and true...there 30 minutes seemed like forever. I found myself actually looking at my bike clock a few times. I don't do 2 minute lap times at thill. 2.5 at best if I am not being lazy on the throttle. So I figure I will probably get in maybe 3 laps at combined east/west day. Yeah that does sound like not much but basically would be equivalent to my 5-6 laps average just on west. Just doesn't seem fair if you only count the laps. But count the miles and you are getting same amount.

Now I did enjoy an unexpected 30 minute session day at thill last year and that extra 10 minutes out there was awesome. When you are slow, feels like you are just getting in a groove when the checkered flag goes up in 20. Once you speed up and get a few more laps in, that goes away. :thumbup

It is so interesting to see the changes and the opportunities coming. I remember when THill was just the East 7 or 8 turns and a couple years later doing track days where we split groups between that side and the T8-14 side. Now a 'real' West side is almost here. The flyover video was very interesting. Runoff concerns and concrete barriers aside, I think it is going to be a lot of fun on its own. Linking for the full course sounds great for more experienced riders or riders who have done several days on each side independantly. Mentally linking all the turns in a 5+ mile might be a bit of a challenge for some of us :afm199. But a fun one. Like Maygoddess, I was there in May of '13 when Lance put us out on 30 minute sessions. The day before had pretty much been a rainout so lots of folks had cancelled or did a no show. Those of use there had the longest 7 session day I have ever had. I really enjoyed it and the additional time really helped me get familiar with a 'new to me' bike. I really thanked my stars I had been trying to get into good shape for the season. I could hardly walk the next day. If I had not been in semi-decent shape it would have kicked my ass by noon.....Like Dave says, the average person is pretty much done in 20, and that is probably due to the level of training. Still, it really looks like a great venue. And, if they can get enough corner workers, a full track would really be great for the endurance race of the season!

This is an interesting side discussion but I guess related when comparing doing more laps at 2.5 miles vs less laps at 5 miles and which is more a$$ kicking for an average rider like me who is in average shape..or well NO shape..well a round shape but been lazy lately! :laughing Anyhoo. I think it is also the track and not the length of track or sessions. For me, Sonoma kicks my ever lovin' arse cuz it is alot of work..constant left and right..barely a long enough straight to have a breather on. I could do 7 10 minute sessions and probably feel as whooped as a full 20 min session day at Thill. RFR was just a nasty track that I really do not like and hope to never return to so the 30 minute sessions dragged for two full days and only time I ever checked my bike clock more than once and was like "wow, I really have 10 MORE minutes..sigh"

For me, Thill being my fave track, I would be happy with 30 minute sessions EVERY time I go there. I know it's not possible, but that track is just my zen spot so it never feels like enough. Only time you feel whooped is if too hot to be on track, but otherwise love as much time as I can get there once I get in the groove! :thumbup

Looking at T-Hill's facebook page has been super fun lately. I didn't realize that the paving would involve multiple layers. I was totally wrong when I said earlier that I thought the paving would be done by the end of last week. Looks like it they're working on the second pass now. Will there be a third? Don't ask me. If they let it cure for 3 weeks it may be the end of June before it's ready? Maybe a few days before then? I can't wait.

I pray that a track day provider runs Thunderhill West using the Horseshoe turn between T22 and T11!
