Thousands of furloughs

Over the next few days, there will be over 100,000 layoffs industry wide in aviation. Some of those people are out on trips that will be their last, a few will be starting trips in the next few days that will be their last. Others will be boarding their last few passengers, or fixing their last airplane. Almost all of them don't know where their next paycheck will come.

If the seem short, stressed or bitter, cut them a little slack over the course of the next month. It's not personal. Aviation is hurting right now. Many of my friends are confused right now. I'm not sure how much longer my job will be safe.

Please, if you are flying in the next few weeks, think before you react. The industry has been through more than we've ever seen, and are likely ever going to see.

Why the apocolyptic exodus described by msethhunter?

Many airlines were given Federal funding that had stipulations. Employees mandated to be kept on the books until certain time frame.

Those deadlines are now rolling up. My spouse is out, though officially on-the-books as employed until past one of those demarcation points.

Business is down beyond the point of immediate recovery. Everyone could jump back to pre-CoVid flying levels and it would not right the ships.

Survival of the fittest will be a simple of matter of which airlines will get subsidized by the Feds and who will be cut loose to suffer the ravages of the free enterprise system.

Another roll of the dice (snake eyes) in the game known as Jumanji 2020

I hope ya hang in. Best wishes to your industry mates.

I was permanently furloughed back in April when my airline went out of business, and out of work since. I really hope the airline I have a CJO with holds and honors that regardless of how long it takes. And hopefully it's a short furlough for those just now getting it.

Disneyland just laid of 30k workers in Anaheim. This is just Disney. 10's of thousands more who support that economy in smaller batches will be in a similar boat.

I'm very sorry for the people affected by this. I have stayed pretty busy this year, but we did make some big cuts. My company is a supplier to the airline industry-- it may onlybe a matter of time for us as well.

Pre pandemic, there was a mechanic/pilot shortage.
I have a friend who's kid was wondering what to do post high school. I've been trying to talk her into going to Emery Riddle.
Man, that sure has changed.
Good luck to all my pilot friends/customers.
Quite a few of my customers are airline pilot's. This is gonna suck.

I retired from United in June. I've been in contact with friends that still work at the SFO maintenance base. It's a bloodbath. Drastic cuts. And, for non-union people, the ones who actually do the important stuff, lose their jobs first. Like our planner. She was an incredibly good employee but went out the door on Wednesday. Her supervisors, which really never did much, stay. Ever since the fiasco of United defaulting our pension, I don't trust management at all.

Layoffs suck. I have been though 2 and I have always been a good performer.

It's a good reminder to save for a rainy day.

This is temporary, airplanes aren't going away. There's no way to guess which industry could potentially be hurt in the future. There's no way to guarantee the future, doesn't mean you should throw away an entire career option

Pilot demand is very cyclical, usually it cycles every couple of decades. It was definitely at the peak. I've never seen it plummet so fast and so low. Hopefully the recovery will be just as steep.
