Thoughts on Burton Custom vs. Burton Custom X

It'll be time for a new board at the end of this season. These are the two boards I'm considering.

Park, high speed runs, backcountry are what I'm interested in. Pretty much anything other than moguls.

Anyone ride either of these and have any thoughts about either of the two boards?

I'll have another board I can use for big powder days.

Thanks!

I've owned both boards, still currently riding my 08 Custom X and don't plan on ever changing boards. Both are great, but I found the X to be more flexible and precise. I don't hit the park too often, I usually ride trails and trees. I've owned five boards in my history of boarding and the custom X is my fav. Some would argue that there are cheaper comparable boards out there, and there probably are, but I had a chance to test ride the X before I bought it. If you wait another month or two, you can probably pick one up for <$400.

Everyone's going towards rocker boards. Ever thought about giving the V-rocker a try?

Myself I'm riding an 08' Banana.

I rented a Burton Custom from the pro shop at Whistler last year and liked it, but I prefer my Soloman. Honestly though, like a high performance sport bike, most of us can't use all the performance anyway, so it is pointless to talk about which high end snowboard is the best. Go with with the one that looks the coolest to you. :cool

You honestly can't tell the difference between different boards?

To the OP: Look, if all you're gonna be doing is riding groomers then honestly it won't make a difference what kinda board you get. If you actually plan on riding off piste, going through trees, stomping 20 footers, and popping boardslides, then you should probably do a bit more research into looking for the type of board you want.

I had to go through 3 different boards before I figured out the type of setup that suits my riding. For one thing, I can't ride stiff boards, and two I actually prefer reverse camber boards as opposed to camber boards. It's not about which board is better than which, it's about which board fits your riding style.

i'll take slight issue with that. i agree that the finer points of what they're marketing are probably lost on the vast majority of us, but the basic parameter of "stiffness" is easily detectable. i have a burton... i can't even remember what board it is but it's a wide one because i have wide feet. it's ok, but noodly. i got an arbor roundhouse a few seasons ago... night and day better board.

i also have a burton canyon for big powder days and it's been so long since i made one of those days i can't even remember what it feels like :cry

I used to ride a Burton Custom that I loved for 5-6 seasons, it was my 2nd board. Then I switched to an Arbor board 4-5 years ago, before they were actually available in store. I loooooooove my arbor board, it is just more responsive than the Custom ever was. I don't know how much tech has advanced for Burton Custom boards but I would probably always stick to Arbor. I ride mostly groomed and trees, with the occasional trip to the park or just look for some bumps and jumps along the main drags.

The Custom X is a lot stiffer than the Custom.

What kind of park are you doing? Jibbing? Jumps? Half Pipe? Rails/Boxes?

In general, I know a lot of people that think both the Custom and Custom X are too stiff for the park.

They do well on big air jumps, half pipe and free riding.

I stopped using Burton 7 years ago and switched to Salomon and haven't looked back.
Agreed. My beef with Burton boards is that they don't last as long as K2s, Salomons, and the other high end competition. That and the markup is high.

Yes of course I can tell a difference between different boards, duh. But anyone that thinks a $700 dollar board is going to make them a better snowboarder than a $500 dollar board is kidding themselves. What is important is that you have the right board for the kind of snowboarding you are going to do. You probably don't want a free style board if all you do is carve and you don't want a downhill board if all you are going to do is stay in the park all day.

I've had Burtons and rented them and don't really like them. The laminate on my last Burton started coming apart after 2 seasons and I hated my Burton boots because they were too wide in the heal and felt cheap. On top of that, I think almost all Burtons are down right fugly.

I bought the top of the line Soloman 7 years ago and love it! Too bad my knees can't take the steep stuff or the jumps like they used to. :( I guess as I get a older I'll have to switch to skis. :laughing
