The SMR ...

I've lived in the Bay Area now for 27 years and have always been too
afraid to show up and try the famous SMR (cool people, apparently,
don't refer to it by it's full name on the internet ... "The first Rule" don't ya know) ... :afm199

... a couple of my friends have been doing it regularly recently,
and assured me if I was not a boob that I'd have fun ... so when
BARF Vintage Cafe moderator Carlo told me he'd be in Point Reyes Station
at 10 am on Sunday morning I saw my opportunity and took a chance ...

... IDK if it's true or not, but I got the idea somewhere that the
SMR has been going on since the late 1950s, so I thought I'd try
it on my old Triumph ...

... two wheel tramp was there on her new-to-her DR650 ...
fun mix of bikes, think you can see three dual-sports in this pic ...

smr.jpg

... I was not the only vintage bike to show up at 7 am at the Starbucks in
Tam Junction ... Gil had just finished the Moto Melee on this '74 Suzuki Titan
... he was riding it two-up with his teenage daughter ... :ride

smr2.jpg

smr1.jpg

... Paul was there with this clean 2001 Honda ... serial #13! :laughing:thumbup

smr4.jpg

... the '73 Tiger at the equally famous "smoke break" on Hwy 1.
We had to go over Tam and ride around the Hwy 1 "Closed" signs
and backtrack on Hwy 1 headed south
due to the recent closure of Hwy 1 ...

smr5.jpg

... another view from the smoke brake overlook ...

smr6.jpg

... a Mad Max Saint sticker ... I scored a couple for my garage ... :)
"Joviality is a Game of Children" ... Bubba Zanetti

... in order to ease my way into the SMR experience,
and to follow the direction of my betters, I left both Tam Junction
and the smoke break before the main ride ...

that worked
well for me, and got me to
the smoke break
and Pt. Reyes Station
without too much drama ... :teeth

plus I had plenty of time to chat
with the riders at Tam Junction, etc. The Tiger was a hit and I
got some pointers from guys who had a ton of
Meriden Triumph knowledge ....

Carlo's 1960 BMW at Pt. Reyes Station ...

smr8.jpg

smr9.jpg

... I think I understood that Carlo makes these factory-quality
custom badges at home ... :cool

smr7.jpg

... and the really cool Motus that showed, also being ridden two-up ...

... so, there I had it ... a totally fun vintage SMR
for this n00bie ... glad I finally showed up and am looking
forward to doing it again on the old Tiger ... :party

I am so glad that you came, John!

The vintage bikes were beauties. I especially loved Carlo's BMW. Those old ones are stunners.

Wow.. so much awesomeness....

" ... each member of the biker gang also
rode 3 and 4-cylinder Kawasaki motorcycles ...
All of the film’s bikes were late model demonstration units,
which were donated by Kawasaki.
Many of the stunt riders in the film kept their
Kawasaki motorcycles after filming concluded."

... god bless Kawasaki ... :laughing:party

Great post, glad you had a good time! Lots of Bay Area history there!
Based on stories told me by Jim and Pat Munroe (RIP), "Biscuits" and Bill Boyd, this is true.

IIRC, a Brit guy started the ride in late 50's or early 60's. He may have worked in the moto biz (dunno), but knew everyone, invited them to ride. It caught on, the rest is history. May have started out as mostly Brit bikes but can't confirm ... and i'm sure the bikes constantly changed over decades.

A few of the old time SMR guys (and old guys from your Club) would know more than I, as I'm a SMR Noob too ...first rode SMR in 1981 riding my '77 CB400-4.

Rode SMR inconsistently throughout 80's - 90's. Witnessed a few tragedies, some totally hairball stuff ... and more ... also been in the middle of Police "activities" :wow.

You guys have heard the stories ... most of it's probably true and not all something to be proud of. I pulled back but still will go out once in a while ... or more likely meet up for breakfast in Pt. Reyes.

It's a great community of riders, now far more mature and mellow than in years past. My friend Brian Halton (founder and former owner of City Bike) still loves The Ride and will go once in a while. (He too leaves early to avoid the mayhem ... he rides super slow pace.)

... in order to ease my way into the SMR experience, and to follow the direction of my betters, I left both Tam Junction and the smoke break before the main ride ...
Good move, just keep an eye on your mirrors for the "fast guys" coming through. They often come in "clumps" of riders. Take care.

Sometimes their passing etiquette is poor. :laughing ... but better now than years past. :thumbup Just remember, to some there, it's just a street race. If taking it easy, I prefer to leave AFTER the main group rather than before.

So, as the City Bike motto sez: RIDE FAST, TAKE CHANCES!
(within reason!)

... yes, everyone seemed very cool ... I'm sure they
were hauling the mail once they got going ... :party

... I was working at the Marin Civic Center in the early '90s
when they were prosecuting that poor guy who was involved
in a yellow line incident (at the top of 13 Turns?) ... guess
he finally got a 3 year sentence ... just used to be hearing
some crazy stories about the CHP crackdown during that time ... :afm199

... I'd have left after the ride on my own, but leaving
before worked out fine ... we left the smoke break early
enough that we didn't have to be passed ... :ride

... awsome pic! :thumbup

... when I first moved to San Francisco and figured out
that Brian was handing out a FREE motorcycle magazine
in newspaper racks on what seemed like every street corner,
I just thought it was the coolest thing in the world ...

... he used to print the AFM clubracing results and I'm sure my
scrapbook has an example of every time I managed to get
my name in there from the 500 Twins class ... :laughing

... I used to do a little 'zine style newsletter that paid
attention to the AFM's formula twins and 250 Production classes
back in the '90s and would send every issue to Brian
because I thought he and City Bike were so cool ... he
invited me once to a monthly City Bike editorial dinner they used
to have in North Beach ... it was such a fun group of
motorcycle people and CB was such an interesting
snapshot of motorcycling ... it's nice to see CB recently adding
pages and returning to what I remembered about it ... :thumbup

... thanks for reading and posting
and hope to see you at a BARF Baja meet-up! :ride

Came across the SMR back in the 80s riding North and there was a vehicle following with a trailer picking up the guys that crashed :(

I was fortunate to live in Mill Valley from 72 - the mid 80's so I could party on Sat. night and still roll out of bed for the 7:30 Tam junction start :teeth

Johnny send me an email address for you. Got something for this thread but too big to post. Maybe you can make it work ...

Cycle Magazine, June, 1974 ... from the LarryLand Library's extensive collection of pre-1980 motorcycle magazines ... quoted here with permission and under fair-use/educational purposes principles, to demonstrate how we used to write about riding ... :ride:teeth

Like those $100K Muir Beach houses? $675K gets you a 800sq.ft. condo today.
Good job resizing Johnny. Your library card is in good standing!

I still read the ebook "Tales from over the edge" Bullet B.T.
On Kindle
I haven't been for the start, but I have "mixed it up" with riders on the return after my ride to the beach.
