It's not just American and it's not just holidays...
I think people look around and often want to distance themselves from a lot of American culture. The reaction is to embrace whatever culture they or their parents/grandparents came from. The net result is American Irish having a stronger sense of national identity HERE than they do in Ireland.
The same goes for the French Canadians. In France, stop signs say "stop". In Quebec? "Arret" - they're clinging to national identity.

Going to Concord from the south?
680 is pretty good until you get close to Mission Blvd (the first Mission Blvd exit) when it's lane-sharing time. Opens up a little bit for a little while past the second Mission Blvd. exit, then up the grade traffic grinds until you get to Calaveras/84 exit. Shortest distance.
880 to 238 to 580 to 680 is going to be longer distance-wise, but may be the same time-wise as traffic moves better and there's a carpool lane on 880. Option 2B would be to take 580 to Crow Canyon road (Castro Valley) and get on 680 in San Ramon
