and AMA HoF’er, Dudley Perkins ...

One of the biggest events in all of motorcycling in the late 1910s and early ‘20s was the national hillclimb at Capistrano Hill in Santa Ana, California. The event regularly drew crowds of 20,000 to 30,000 spectators. The steep Capistrano Hill (at some points, more than a 70-degree angle) was considered insurmountable.

For six years, riders tried and failed to top the tremendous hill. In 1920, a rider shocked the thousands of fans by becoming the first to make it to the top. That rider was Dud Perkins, riding a Harley-Davidson. That feat alone made him one of the most popular motorcyclists in the country.

Nice!

When it comes to bad .....Bad Brad was the man.

The first American 500 Grand Prix MX Champ. Every Friday I would rush home to my Cycle News to see how the race the past weekend went. I still remember jumping up and down when I saw he was the Champ on the cover. :banana

The pic John posted above was on the Kawi but it was Suzuki that took him to the top of the world. He came out to Sandhill when I was at the Jimmy Weinert school of MX after becoming the Champ. I am not an autograph hound but my Suzuki hat he signed still hangs in my garage.

big props to all racers named here -
each & every one certified Bad-Ass

that said, ol Cal was (in his time) truly something else

some of us OGs here remember his elegant riding, the boxing shoe 'racing boots', & the arcing 2-wheel slides round Laguna Seca on the low-RPM flathead KR750

Cal dragged that worn out, obsolete weapon across the pond (with zero H-D support) to UK circuits he'd never seen & waxed everybody, repeatedly

his sad & completely unnecessary demise at a shabby NZ track on a POS Suzuki was a crushing blow to the sport & all who admired him
