I've been contemplating stealing an unused / left outside to rot DR650 from a friend of mine. I've ridden a DR350 on a couple of modern day long rallies with new bikes and I didn't have a problem riding right around all of them in the dirt. I think they were scared to scratch their new KTM's and Betas. The DRs are the BEST on the streets as well which is really important for ADV traveling. No one likes being on a squirrely, buzzy bike for pavement pounding to get where the off roading starts or to hit the road back home.
