Thank you organ donors

Rookie My A$$!
Last night my best friend David was given a new heart, thanks to an organ donor. Because of this gift, David will live many more years, and his wife and four children will have their father in their lives, to give them his love and guidance, and to share their joys and sorrows. As with all organ donations, this gift was anonymous. All I know is that it was described by the transplant team members as "a big healthy heart from a 38 year old male". David is now in recovery at his hospital in LA, where he is expected to remain for another week or two. His family is there with him. I will be visiting with him sometime after he is released from the hospital, during his lengthy at home recovery period.

What this donor did was beyond generous. What I imagine (but cannot know) is that the donor's family participated in making this gift. They did so at a time when they were in the period of shock and pain from losing their love one. They were not bound to consent, but did so out of their personal sense of responsibility and kindness to their fellow man. They all sacrificed so that a person who was a stranger to them could live. They did so to make the life of their loved one even more meaningful and important.

Fellow riders, if you have not yet done so, please register as an organ donor. Also, please discuss this decision with your family members and tell them to support your decision if the worst happens to you. Ask them to consider becoming a registered donor as well. Talk to your friends, and ask them to do the same.

I'm an organ donor. They can have everything except my eyes. They may not want the liver, but it mostly works... :teeth

Glad your friend was able to get the heart he needed to still be here... if anything were to happen to me, I like the thought that I could continue helping others even after I died! :)

congratulations to your friend and hope he does well with the new pump.

my brother got a 21 year old girl heart back in '04 and has been doing well with it since and continues to do so...and no he didn't turn ghey :laughing

they are still a bit of a bitch, but anti-rejection drugs have come a long way- after the first year he will prob settle into his new normalcy...was he real sick for a long time prior to finding his donor? if so he's gonna feel great.

and yeah, they can have whatever they want off me if it comes to that...hopefully i'll be too old and nothing will work right anymore :thumbup

I can't give blood or organs in the US. They don't care that I lived in Africa, they don't care that I contracted rabies when I was 18. I can't donate because I lived in England in the '80s. They are worried I have Mad Cow Disease...30 years after the breakout. I guess I am taking it all with me.

I wonder if you would be able to donate your body to science in some fashion or another. That is of course forgoing any post-expiration plans or parade.

This is my plan. Donate to a medical school, forensics school, etc. There are some restrictions; HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, etc. Not sure if mad cow is one of them. :rolleyes

Just have to find the "right" place, I guess. http://www.aatb.org/

+1 with the OP. I'm an organ donor and they can take whatever they want, I won't be needing it.

Also, you can help without offing yourself by donating blood and/or platelets. I do it fairly regularly and its no big deal. The bone marrow donation thing, however, isn't something I've volunteered for yet.

That is so awesome. I hope youre friend lives a long, full, and happy life.

Everyone should be donors. There's no reason other than selfishness for not doing so.

I'm a donor for anything that is fit to take. And if a loved one died unexpectedly, I wouldn't hesitate to say OK, please use whatever you can. (The pain of loss is offset somewhat by the joy of knowing a part of your loved one lives on.)

It is sad to think and seem to me to be a quandary at best to think, someone had to die for someone to live.

It is a gift of life from the selfless last act of the donor :thumbup

Me a donor.

Funny but sad story of my best mate. Unfortunately he died at his own hands, his drinking caused the unfortunate single accident.
However he was a donor and the funny thing we talked privately about was his liver was still in great shape and was given to a child to live her life.

I've thought of doing this as well. And if I do so, I've also thought it might be fun to have some dotted lines and the words "Cut Here" tatooed on my body exactly where the cuts for doing an autopsy are done. I can just imagine the laughs in the autopsy lab as my body is uncovered.

I'm an organ donor. Anything they want, they can have. OP, I am glad your friend gets to continue living and being there for his family because of the donor's generosity.

It is an awesome program.....and an equally awesome write-up, Oldapeman.
Well done.
I too am a registered donor. Lil red dot proudly displayed on my license.
I would proudly display the dot on my helmet too, if not for the fear of someone taking me out intentionally for access to my kidneys :teeth

If all goes to plan, there will be some sort of fireball or explosion at the time of my death. That is why my belt is made of detcord. But if I am caught unsuspecting at the time of my expiration, that could be an option. Or I could just donate to Canada or Mexico.

My grandmother lived 12+ years with a donor's heart. When I'm done, take my bits and make me immortal!

Same for me in that I can no longer donate blood, but no one ever said anything about other organs so I am set for the complete breakdown!:thumbup Anyway, I was crazy long before cows got mad at something.:p
