Wednesday

Temps in the mid 30’s still. After breakfast we had free ride for a couple of hours. I had to take it easy due to fatigue and soreness.

I worked on some of the drills from the previous day. We finished up the curriculum before lunch. After lunch we had some pistol practice. I had never shot a pistol with a silencer. Way cool for sure. :cool

Randy Krummenacher is a Swiss Moto 2 racer. He is really fast out here as it is his 3rd time to visit the camp. Randy usually takes first or second in each race. The top guys are smooth around these tracks but what I notice the most from them is they consistently make fewer mistakes per lap than the rest.

After shooting we went into fun races. I determined that I would not miss participating in anymore races. This resulted in a steady diet of ibuprofen . We rode a relay race made up of 5 teams of 5 riders. We had to carry a red shop cloth as the “baton”. Each rider rode 2 laps then pitted and passed the baton. The normal space for stowing the rag was under the seat front. My team was leading until the last lap of the last rider when the rider dropped the rag mid track and did not realize it. We finished last after that.

We then started some short track flat track races under the pavilion using the same format as mentioned before. I was gridded in the 3rd head and ended up taking 3rd which sent me to semi #2. From semi #2 I finished 2nd which sent me to the B main. What a blast short track flat track is. By dinner we were famished. I would have ate the ass end out of a dead rhino at that point :(. With Thursday being an off day Colin and staff decided to head to the bar and enjoy some extra activities. Interesting to hang out with the guys and see they are just like the rest of us. Only one guy ended up heaving in the bathroom :green.

Colin and Merle playing pool.

Got back to camp after the bar closed and drank with the guys until 4:00 am when I couldn’t hang no more. I was called a puss by the last 2 standing one staff member and a crazy Canadian :laughing.

Thursday

Thursday is supposed to be an “off” day. When I went to sleep the night before I had every intention in riding on Thursday, when I woke I realized my body could not take it so I tagged along with some of the other campers and headed to NASA’s Johnson space center.

While we were gone there was free riding and skeet shooting that we missed. :ride

I want to take a couple of minutes and mention the instructors. Colin was there everyday except the second Sunday. Even when he was flying to Malaysia on Saturday he spent half the day with us. The quality of instruction was first class in my opinion. They were all approachable and after riding just hung out with us in the common areas drinking and telling stories. So here is a short intro to them that I did off of memory :afm199.

Instructors

Colin Edwards: 2 time World Superbike Champion and current MotoGP racer.

Steve Bodak: Motocross racer in his younger days and current beginner instructor at the camp. Steve built the camp as well as takes care of the tracks and facility upkeep.

Merle Sherb: Was one of the only 2 Americans invited to Marky Marquez “Superprestigio” flat track event in Spain. He is current AMA Pro Flat Track #78 and has competed with all three of his brothers in flat track most their lives. He and his dad were the first Father/Son 1-2 at I think the Springfield Mile. Merle is the advanced instructor.

Shea Fouchek: AMA Pro Supersport racer #39. Shea has raced AMA since like 2005 and has raced WERA and CMRA as well. Shea is the intermediate instructor.

Joe Prussiano: Won the Pikes Peak Pro Class Singles 3 years in a row and in 2006 was the Texas Flat Track series Open Pro Champion. Now the camps head instructor.

Friday

After breakfast we had some free ride time before the racing began. I worked on the TT track some but still needed to take it easy on my body. Our first race of the day was an endurance race. Each team was 2-3 riders taking 10 minute turns for an hour. My team consisted of Kris and John because we all three had TTR230’s. Kris is the fastest of us and I am the slowest while John was so excited he dropped it a couple of times during the race. We were able to take 2nd place though so woot woot! Next came Load racing. For a short video of this, check out the official boot camp Fbook page. We grouped back up with our relay teams of 5. Each team has 1 rider and 4 passengers. There are 2 tires spaced approximately 20ft apart. The passengers and rider start at one tire and the rider ferries each passenger to the other tire then turns around and heads back to pick up the next passenger. Once all 4 passengers are on the other side then all 5 get on the bike and make the trek back to the first tire. All of this is against the clock of course so the lowest time wins. We had 3 of the bigger guys on our team so you could imagine how we looked all on the TTR125. We did win though thanks to James’s good riding. Again I have no good pictures of these since I was riding. We then competed in a slow race. I watched some of these on Saturday nights at the AFM races and they are a blast. I am no good at them but they are a blast.
Next came the flat track demo. The camp has an 1/8th mile flat track. Here is Merle and Colin showing us how it’s done.

After lunch we embarked on some competition that I actually had a chance at unbeknownst to me. (LOL) The shooting competition started with three skeet shots with the 12 gauge. Then run to the next station and pick up the 12 gauge pump and shoot one target, when it falls it flings a clay pigeon into the air. Shoot the next silhouette and repeat with second clay. Jog to next station and use a 9mm Springfield XD to shoot a rotating 5 star target (this target intimidated me at practice). Limp to the next station and fire a 1911 .45 at 5 silhouette’s. In the video you will see me jog over behind the atv. Behind the ATV is the .308 Hawes at 200 yards. 3pts for a head shot, 1 for a body all while being times and scored by Colin in your back pocket! :cool

I took second over all but tied with first in points. He beat me by 5 seconds though. :thumbup

After words there was some more free ride time. By later in the afternoon it was time for another superpole. Colin or Joe followed us using a Gopro while we are trying to improve our times. We were sent home with the video on a flash drive with all of the campers :thumbup.

Note how slow we look. It sure feels faster when you are in control! LOL. I did get Colin to “woot” when I timed the slide right into a corner. My time as compared to James improved 5 seconds. I am using James as my benchmark because he is so consistent. I went from 17 seconds behind James to 12 seconds behind. I feel that I learned enough skills that I could improve much more with more practice. Before dinner we went back under the pavilion and lights for some more organized TT short track racing with the same formats as before. I was spent after this and enjoyed beer and dinner. The cook out did himself with a Banana’s Foster for dessert. MMMM. More beer after dessert to wash it all down.

Saturday morning I awoke to the smell of the smoker cooking.

Even the best shape campers are starting to show signs of fatigue. The wounded :laughing

Today was the first day I tried to ride the flat track. It takes quite a bit of testicular fortitude to throw the bike into the turns like that. This went straight into flat track racing on the bigger track. I did not fare well and ended in the LCQ 3rd. The TT230 actually finally had an advantage on this track but my lack of experience kept me from making use of it.

After lunch was time to shoot this!

One dry fire and one shot. :party

Colin had to leave at noon to make his flight to Malaysia for the MotoGP test on Monday. So first we had to do some group photos with everybody.

We then had the final Superpole. James Ellison 1st place, Randy Krummenacher 2nd, and Mark (forgot last name) third. congratulations! :thumbup

While at dinner we had a ceremony where they mounted jersey's from James Ellison and Keaton Butler on the wall. Unfortunately I did not get any pics of Keaton but he is a pro MX racer from England.

The cook made one delicious BBQ! MMMMMMMMM :teeth

James Ellison thought dinner was good also. :laughing

After dinner I stepped outside to get a picture with this awesome dude. Every minute he was at camp he was killing it on the PW50. He impressed me! Hayes

Thanks for sharing all of this with us.

If I had enough spare money, I would love to sign up for a future boot camp. But they way my logic works, I would probably end up spending it on another bike instead. :laughing

Fantastic write-up and pics. I've talked a to few people who have attend TTBC and really enjoyed it and the camp looks even better than they described. Glad you had such a good time with the short track and TT. Its the most fun you can have on a motorcycle, IMO.

What a total blast. Texas looks like my kind of place. How was that .50?

Colin said he purchased the silencers at the local gun store! :wtf Texas FTW!

The .50 was incredible. Gil, the range master, said he has been doing this with the camp for 3 years now and he still is not used to the sound. The sound is intense when you are to the side of the weapon. When you are the one pulling the trigger it is not nearly as earth shattering, I guess due to the muzzle brake.

When we were all done Gil brought out some kind of exploding target. When he shot that thing it boomed like I have never seen. Here is a crappy video of it.:laughing

Awesome story of real life Moto coolness. :banana :ride :banana

When I saw his camp I thought of how cool it must be and have considered it a post knee replacement bucket list benchmark item.

Thanks for showing me how much it has to be.
