T-Boned, surgery, SF Gen. Now what?

NolaNomad

Missing Benders
Hello fellow barf'rs and friends.
I'm layed up at SF Gen since the night of my wreck:11\10..

I in no way mean this as a rant or poor me attention whore post.
I've been riding in the Bay Area for over 7 years and commute everyday.
I know and assume the risks as we all do.

Left leg split wide open dislocated knee, fib and tib. Dusted all ligaments attatching knee joint together. Bled out a bit until EMTs tournequet the leg. Bone docs at SF Gen amazingly saved th leg. Intensive care, with an aluminum exoskeleton screwed through the meat, into the bone. Now fading in and out of conscienceness. Waiting for the next big surgery.

I could have been better prepared, physically and financially.
The guy who T-Boned me was Identified and police report has been filed.

My questions to the community:
I'll be out of work, can I file disability?
Attorney or legal firm recommend?
I don't want to go home in between surgeries, any rehab facility?
Anyone have a leg or knee rebuilt? What to expect?

I'm sure I'll have many more Q's but the meds are kicking in.
Im a little scared and nervous about my future but information from fellow riders about resources out there will for sure help.

Please feel free to offer your kind and experienced knowledge in this post
Thank you-
Robert

Robert,

Panthera/Jed had a big accident a few years ago and recovered pretty good. His PT was in Berkeley. Look him up and speak to him. He's a real sweet guy.

Best of luck recovering. Call if you need anything.

Marc.

Wish I could be more helpful but have no experience in what you are dealing with.

Just want to wish you good healing and to say I am glad you are alive and kicking, even if its with one leg right now. Sounds like a real scary deal.

Lots of people with experience here that will help you.

Cowboy up!

Holy shit dude. You're not alone, several BARFers (myself included) have gotten through bad wrecks with severe injuries and have put our lives back together (or are in the process of doing so). You'll get through this.

TheNibbler might be able to comment on local rehab facilities.

The staff at SF Gen will have folks on site who can help you get and file your temporary disability paperwork, just ask.

Also ask them for a temporary disability car placard application; even if you don't have a car it will help people taking you to doc and PT appointments. Unfortunately if you mail it in the DMV takes forever to process it--less time if you can wheelchair it into the DMV and get it done on the spot.

Rest and heal now. It will take time, so try to be patient. When you get to the point of rehab and physical therapy, be diligent--do those exercises like they're your new fucking religion. My PT at Highland in Oakland was astounding; we nicknamed her "Evil Yoda." She's a huge part of the reason I'm so mobile today, though.

Get a shower chair before you go home. If you need a knee scooter I will loan you mine, though it sounds as if your injury is too high and involves your knee to use it as a crutch alternative.

If you have been employed in CA and paying taxes through an employer, you can file for CAsdi California disability. Absolutely. If you are a contractor who gets 1099s, no.
Get a lawyer, don't even think about doing this on your own. Sign NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING that the guy who hit you, the insurance company or ANYONE else hands you unless you are 100% positive you know what it is. The other insurance company may send you a check. DON'T cash it. Talk to a lawyer. Insurance companies can be very tricky.

You are going to be doing months of rehab and yes the hospital will find a place for you for the initial period where you need to stay there.

You will be doing multiple surgeries and months of rehab, or years. Do all the exercises religiously, it will make the difference between excellent recovery and a life of painful limping.

This. In fact let me repeat what he said..

Wow, really sorry to hear that. Best wishes in healing up.

And lots of sound advice above.

My only suggestion, is if you have decent med insurance, try to get transferred to an "in-network" hospital, if you are able. SFGH accepts all insurance, but doesn't necessarily have preferred status with any of them, which can put you on the receiving end of "balance billing", which is illegal, but they still manage to do it somehow.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Not as fast as I look.

Don't know about the physical part, but we can always be better prepared financially.

I assume the one leg is the problem, and nothing else. I was without use of both legs for awhile, so rehab, and life in general, got very tough. With one good leg, things will be a little easier to cope with the extended recovery. Sorry, I don't know about rehab in SF.

You are going to have a lot of bills coming your way. WHEN you get an attorney, make sure to have them handle stalling the hospital, etc. for payment. If you get in a bind for other expenses, they can handle that, too.

Don't get too down. It doesn't help the recovery. And don't get strung-out on pain killers. My best to you, fellow victim.

Is your insurance handling your bike? Do we need to retrieve it?

If you are a contractor, and you do pay self employment tax (a little more than 14%) you should still be able to apply for disability.

Heal up. A friend recently went through this with BOTH knees he's doing amazing I'll see if I can get him in touch with you.
