I've *always* lusted after one of these. Throw that motor into a custom frame (Spondon?) and I'm golden.

Well it is your lucky day on ebay! :party
For around only $100k-ish, they can be yours! :teeth

Unless the bidding is shilled, this pair will easily go for much more. Buyer will probably sell one to cover the costs.

The Q&A is great....

Q: Gday Grumpy, I just had to say you may go down in history as the smartest hoarder ever :) I so want to bid but if I did I would have no house to keep them in. :) 09-Sep-14
A: Hello mate... Trust me when l say it maybe the ONLY thing l have ever gotten right in my life, Every thing else l do & have done in the past l screw up...:) And by the way a house is only bricks & mortar , But the RG is metal & plastic...And that's heaps better... Thanks for the laugh, Best wishes

Q: Yes I thought you would say that. Well good luck and I'm impressed someone could have this bikes for so long and kept them in new condition. I hope you have had the pleasure of ridding a RG500. Regards Nickolas 09-Sep-14
A: Hi Again Nickolas, (shaz83) Thanks for wishing me luck, l had many years of riding RG 500,s & l wish l had one l could ride around now, There is nothing like an RG on full noise,.. :) Regards,

Q: What is your estimated value of the two bikes ? Did you buy them new ? And if you did what did they cost you ? Sorry the question but I'm a classic 2 stoke collector and a large collection. So this is very interesting. Cheers ! 09-Sep-14
A: Hi Shaz83, l guess the value is dependant on what someone is prepared to pay, The RG with the single seat cowl was purchased by me in the crate & removed in 1995, The other bike is from Suzuki Australia & comes with a letter saying that the new owner is the first owner And lm going to avoid the question on how much l paid for them... :) Regards
,
Q: Over $90 000 ? Is this for real ??? 09-Sep-14
A: Yes & Yes..

Q: Just a quick question why does the bike have 2klm on the gauges Cheers 09-Sep-14
A: From being pushed around for the last 30 years, Regards

Q: G'day Grumpy Dad Just like to say "your a legend". As an old RZ500 owner, I respect your passion. Would love to smell your garage. Wishing you happiness. Doug. 09-Sep-14
A: Lol...Good on ya Doug, Thx p.s. Garage does smell kinda nice... :)

Q: Hello Grumpy Dad, is here any chance you would sell the bikes separately. Thank you. 07-Sep-14
A: Hi Mate, At this stage l will only sell them as a pair, Thanks,

Q: Hi Mate, does the pre production bike come with books and factory race stand ? Cheers 06-Sep-14
A: Hi Mate, The pre prod bike comes with a single seat unit, factory race stand & service manuals, As well as a letter from Suzuki Australia verifying that the bike is indeed a pre production bike, Regards,

I was either born too late or started riding too late, but what's the story with these bikes and why are they worth so much?

There are two in Fresno. A street bike and an actual RG500 race bike.
Both owned by the same guy. The racer, he bought from the UK, had it shipped over.
The street bike, he's ridden a bit. I rode it a few miles.
The race bike, he's never fired, likely never will.

Of the 70+ excellent motorcycles I've gone through since 1968 my RG500 is the top of the list of "shoulda kept it". They are a two-crankshaft rotary valve induction square four and are the closest thing to a street version of the then Moto GP bikes. I had been racing Yamaha RZ350's for a couple of years and then got my RG. The closest comparison I can say is it felt like riding the RZ's on LSD. Just fuckin mental. I have no doubt you could lap any track quicker on any modern 600 but the rush is not the same. Only made a few years, lots got crashed or blown up, were not sold everywhere and not in the USA. Shoulda kept it!

They were also damn near impossible to register as a street machine. Savvy owners kind of got around that by claiming that they were GSXR-500's. :p

I don't know why they are worth so much, but they are very cool.

If you go back to 1985, bikes were changing quickly, and the 4 cylinder two strokes were extremely rare. They were fast, light and handled well for their time and sounded awesome. You could not buy them in California, so guys were buying them in Canada, and bringing them to California in pieces. For the average guy, they were a Moto GP bike. Around that time, I used to ride the SMR with a guy that was lucky enough to own a RG500, RZ500 and I believe a FJ1200 all at the same time.

Today a stock 600cc four cylinder bike will eat it for lunch, but it won't have that 2 stroke soul.

A few years back I remember seeing a used Suzuki quad for sale at a Santa Clara dealer that had been fitted with an RG500 engine.
