"Survival"/"Barebones" camping...

So basically I would like to go into a somewhat "controlled" environment and last a couple days on my wits and skills with the bare minimal. I'm sure theres a following and pehaps even a name for this type of stuff but not too sure what it's called (if anything). So I'm looking for good survival books to study (make a fire outta twigs etc...) and places around the Bay that one would be able to hunt or fish in with a water supply. My ultimate goal would be to hike about a day to an area (not too far to get lost but just far enough) stay for a day or two finding water and hunting (small game rabbit, bird, fish and the likes) and hike back in. Any books, area suggestions, experiences and info on this type of thing would be greatly appreciated.

My bikes have pedals now
I went through survival training in Alaska when I was up there. Two days of classroom, then they dropped you off in groups of 4-6 people in the Alaska snow on an island and said "See you Friday!"

We were not allowed to build a fire the first night (initially). We were finally told that we could start building a fire since it dropped down to 15 degrees, colder then expected.

There wasn't anything to hunt or fish really, just some sea urchins in the water. And since I wasn't desperate enough to eat any (I hate sea food), I went for three days without food. Hunger pangs go away after the first day.

My #1 problem was not drinking enough fluids.

There are plenty of books on that stuff I am sure.

find some up to date military survival manuals. figure where you are going to go as this will be what you want to focus on, and what resources you can garner from your surroundings. think shelter, food/water, fire (you should practice this and learn how to build one even in wet weather), there is much more...but read a lot and start small.

I was sent to survival camp at age 11, 1 month in northern ontario in the bush. apparently, it's not funny to be that much of a fuck up at that age. :laughing

have fun. :)

Gossamer

You know what, sabes que?
Go to East Oakland. Survive.

:rofl

to the op:
sounds like a cool idea. My family has a ranch in Napa county off of wooden valley rd. I remember one day my dad, brother, and I went hunting for pigs at night on an atv. We stopped at the summit of a hill to wait for the moon to rise, however we forgot that it was a new moon and we didnt see the damn thing until after midnight. Anywho, while we were up there it got really cold and windy. Even though we only had matches, we decided to build a fire. It was challenging and fun, working together to get some warmth. We thought it would be a good idea to try and do something such as what you are doing but havent gotten around to it. Let us know how it goes :thumbup

In seriousness,
Go camping with all of the normal shit you would take: tent, stove, sleeping bag, jacket, food... As you spend more side outside, you will be able to take less and less gear, finally finding a balance between weight, necessity, and comfort.
You can always go out with a knife, book of matches, and a clif bar and see what happens, but it doesn't sound that fun.
