Sur Ron eBike Motorcycle dirt thing

I'm just looking for some clarity on this machine. It's captivating to me.

I guess, it's basically an electric dirt bike.

As a dirt bike that means it can only be used in OHV areas. Do any of the "Green" and "Red" sticker things apply to these? I know those are basically emissions stickers, but they're also criteria for entrance (I think) at some times. But I assume these are "non-stickered". Is that an issue at all?

And, as a dirt bike, you don't need to have a M1 license to ride one.

But, since it's a dirt bike, it CAN'T be used on, for example, a fire road. For that it needs to be a plated street bike.

So, there's the discussions on plating it as a "moped", but now you need an M1, you have to down rate it to run at 30MPH. Can you ride these on faster streets? I saw one mention that it could be used in the bike lane, but that doesn't make any sense.

Finally, there's a "pedal" kit which, I guess, turns it in to a "bicycle". But what does that mean? I heard anecdotes about "putting on pedals to avoid being hassled". So, if it has pedals does that recategorize it? Can it be used on a fire road without an M1? Or can it only be pedaled. (I had a moped. I've pedaled a moped. They pedal in the technical sense, but it pretty much stops there.)

My fantasy was being able to use one of these as a gateway for my wife to ride. They seemed very friendly to very novice riders, but I was hoping to be able to use it to explore local fire roads rather than running trails at an OHV for the sake of running trails at an OHV. Especially for someone not necessarily in to the challenges of technical riding.

I am sure he will find this.

Thanks for helping me identify this bike, i saw a teenager riding one in a SF bike lane and thought it was pretty cool. I'm sure SFPD would look the other way with the amount of things they have to deal with.

I have e- bikes, motorcycle and a Kuberg Ranger on the way. I've been an EV fan and builder for over 30 years. I like the Sur-Ron products but do check out Kuberg and Juiced Bikes, some cool stuff. After much research I went with the new Kuberg Ranger on a special pre-release. 14kW (19H.P.) and about 80 pounds! The Kuberg Freerider looks to be a better value then Sur-Ron, considering $, power/weight, and options.

Oh, no registration on these but vary as to what trails you can ride on. A lot to be said for an eBike under 1000W and "20 mph" (wink, wink) top speed. A Class 1 or 2 can be ridden anywhere you can ride a standard peddle bike. Parks and Nat Forest rangers are beginning to enforce. What you give up in extreme off road performance you get in abundant trails close by and beach riding with fat tires. Putting peddles on to try to trick a LEO will work AT TIMES much like a paper bag over your whiskey! Scooting along at 30+ is not going to fool anyone. These Fat Tire eBikes are a mega blast on fire roads and will go plenty fast enough to scare you in a lot of cases. On flat ground peddling hard in top gear I can hold 36 mph on my Juiced Ripcurrent 750W (1000W peak). Casual cadence peddling is an easy 20 mph. Many places rent them, maybe a good place to start.

I just saw one today at my local county park on a dirt multi-use trail. The rider said he hasn't got talked to by the rangers.... yet. He had pegs, btw.

I am sure a lot of sur ron owners are hitting up local mt bike trails, don't know if the rangers are on it or not, or just turn a blind eye...

the ranger looks interesting half standup scooter, half dirt bike....

Here ya go you can start by reading this. To ride it at OHV parks you need to have either a green sticker or a moped plate. I have the moped plate. Supposedly you can just go to the DMV and bring your receipt and they can get you a green sticker. With a moped plate you can ride it on the street, OHV park, Class II and III bike lanes. It's basically a dual sport. You'll need to wear a DOT approved helmet and have insurance though. I always ride with full moto gear. Or you can pretend its an ebike I guess and just ride it in the bike lane and bike trails. I honestly think it should be a moped, all the classifications make it a moped except it's pretty powerful for a moped.

My co worker bought a Segway branded sur ron. The bike impressed me, it was very agile and fun to ride. Just rode on the pavement though

I bought it plated already. The previous owner did it for me. But supposedly you fill out the DMV form and pay the fees then you get the plate.

That plate has saved me on a few occasions. I was riding the slick rock bike trail in the Sierras and the dude at the campground was all you can't unload your dirtbike here, because I had the KLX with me, then I told him the Sur Ron is plated and he said oh it's ok for that one. Also if you want to bail out of a trail that is around a licensed vehicle road like in Stonyford you can do it.

There is a powermode switch on the Sur Ron. The Low Power mode it doesn't go faster than 30 I think and you have no regen. The High Power it can go 47mph and has some regen coasting kind of like a Toyota Prius. They even have a plate you can buy that says your bike only has such and such power, Luna Cycle sells them. So when you wanna stay legal you keep in low power then when you need to rip put it in high power.

Yeah it changes direction super fast. That's what happens when your dirtbike is like 125lbs. I get TONS of people asking me about the Sur Ron because I'm always out riding it and I ask the one's that know about the Sur Rons if they are excited about he Storm Bee coming out. A good chunk of people don't really care for the Storm Bee they really want a ultra lightweight dirtbike. I am kind with them on that. The Light Bee is really unique bike there's really nothing out there that can compare to it currently in price and performance.
