Supermoto Highside = Broken collarbone :(

Junkie

gone for now
I wish I'd had mine plated when I broke it. Ended up healing pretty damn crooked. This xray is from a year after I broke it.

Tell us why ?

You're suppose to ninja slap the ground then tuck and roll.. Oh right.. you forgot. Blame the motorcycle why don't you.
:x :laughing

Thought about a ninja roll, but the superman belly flop seemed to work better :twofinger

Right after my crash i immediately know my collar is broken. I can hear the bone crunching when i move. Teeth grinding sensation and pain.

Ugh, that's exactly how it was for me. The pain was one thing, but that feeling of the bone fragments grinding together just put shivers down my spine.

And yes, the surgery was effing magic. I did a track day less than a week after the surgery.

The original break:

The most recent follow-up. The plate will come out in November.

broke my left side CB twice from 2 bike crashes. the first time it healed up and was better than new but the two bones overlapped when it mended so there's a bump . The second time it broke a little closer to the joint. it never healed up on its own and needs plate and pins and a graft from my hip bone . $125,000+

Kaiser just sucks sometimes. Did you go to the Hayward Emergency or the new one in San Leandro that just opened? That sure looks like it needs a plate/screws.

I don't know if Kaiser Ins. will cover someone outside their group, but this guy has done surgery on me 3 times & has always been great! Gave me use of my shoulder back when 2 other surgeons felt they could not. :teeth

I went to the Vallejo Kaiser, and my assigned Ortho just didnt seem to care. I was recommended to another ortho by a friend in Vacaville who was highly spoken of, but when I emailed my primary to complain about my current ortho and wanted to switch, they just gave me more attention instead of just letting me switch.

Whatevs, as long as it heals strong I guess :dunno

Sounds like another motorcycle hating Orthopedic surgeon. I got this runaround too, & went thru 4 Ortho's until I found one that was sympathetic to me & my injury regardless of cause.

I've said this many times, realize many doctors regardless of specialty, don't like motorcyclists. Orthopedic surgeons especially. NEVER tell them you hurt yourself riding a motorcycle. Say, "I was skiing, surfing, rock climbing, riding a bicycle, etc."

This will keep you out of the discrimination eye toward motorcyclists. If the injury is bad enough, course you gotta tell them. But if it's one minor break, like the collarbone, say you were playing Rugby, or soccer, or something equally similar & less threatening.

Believe me, I went down a 4 year road of a useless shoulder, & 4 docs who didn't care, until I finally found this guy (European born) who didn't discriminate against riders, & got me use of my shoulder back after a surgery the others wouldn't do. It works...:thumbup

Wow, thats some frustrating information. Sadly I couldnt lie about this one because I showed up in a one piece race suit, lol. But good to know for next time, haha.

I'm telling ya man; never offer the info your a motorcyclists to anyone anywhere (especially a boss at work.*) It can save you a lot of grief if professionals your talking to don't know your away from work hobbies.

Believe me; I've faced discrimination from numerous sources many times in a half-century of riding. I don't tell anymore unless asked...:x

Get well soon!!! :thumbup

* horror story I'll tell another time...

Alan/Nic/Carrie - Did you guys take out the metal plate and screws later?

I am in the same situation with a stupid crash on my 150F. 2 weeks into it and Kaiser wasn't willing to do a surgery until I got it escalated and visited a surgeon who suggested I should ASAP. They told me recovery time is 3 weeks though and I shouldn't bother about taking the plates off.

I just got my plate out a few weeks ago. My ortho told me from the get-go that she would recommend getting it out after a year. I'm glad I did - the plate was absolute magic for healing, but once the bone was healed, the plate was just uncomfortable. It rubbed my skin in a bad way, and even seatbelts and bra straps were annoying.

The take-it-out surgery was the easiest surgery ever. They put in a good nerve block so I would have a very light general, and I was up and walking a half hour afterwards. She partially re-opened the old incision, so I'll only have one scar, and it healed nicely.

Effing Kaiser. :( "Take an aspirin, you'll feel better."
