Hi all, we had plans to ride in Foresthill this weekend, but just found out that there's a fire that sparked ~30 miles from the area. Needless to say, we're going to try to find another area to ride.

I see that Dog Valley area seems like a sweet spot to ride, but unsure where to stage.

Is there any suggestions on where to ride near Reno, Lake Tahoe, Carson City, or Virginia City area?

There are so many, I don't know where to start.

I don't know about the fires there, but otherwise I would suggest if you're going to Foresthill, check out Sugar Pine Lake and head back by taking the small road in the Iowa Hills down to Colfax.

A good place to meet at Dog Valley would be where Dog Valley Road meets Henness Pass Road. All unpaved roads there, but somewhat wide right there. More north there are camp grounds, Crystal Mine and endless unpaved roads to get lost on. I have been all over that area on my Suzuki DR200SE.

Have you been to the View Point on the Mt. Rose Hwy?:

Have you been down the west side of Lake Tahoe such as Emerald Bay?

Have you been up Hwy 20 and walked out to the wooden deck lookout point here (about a 1/8th mile hike from this spot):

Have you been to the view point on the south side of Donner Lake:

moon rocks
For dirt bikes. That area was packed the last time I was there. I think it had something to do with many off from work because of the pandemic. RV's at every possible spot, countless people living out there. So many kids on dirt bikes that it was dangerous to even be in the area.

I was on my Suzuki DR200 SE riding past Winnemucca Ranch Rd to visit a buddy who lives out in the middle of the desert. After many kids almost crashing into me, I decided to take pavement all the way back and not go near Moon Rocks on the return trip. Much longer on pavement from Cold Springs Valley, where I keep my DR200SE.

However, the Moon Rocks area is probably fine now as most of NV is reopened.

Oh, somehow I didn't notice that!

I am less than half dirty, a couple of dual sports. I mostly ride on pavement.

Yeah, the Moon Rocks area is a great area for dirt bikes. Nothing is paved out that way and countless roads.

The same goes for the Doggy Valley (and Long Valley) area.

One place I enjoy going to every couple of years is the ride to Horse Lake, CA on my Moto Guzzi Stelvio (is somewhat of a dual sport bike). Unpaved 35 mile road, start is just North of Susanville,CA and I go back home on Hwy 395. The Horse Lake is right in the middle.

Or you can go the opposite direction.

Exactly type of roads that the Stelvio is designed for, taking a freeway to an unpaved road.

But it's probably too far for most barfers.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

We tried going to Dog Valley to camp at the CA side, but there was a closure sign at where pavement turned to gravel, so we ended up at Moon Rocks.

Luckily it wasn't busy when we were there, but we did get quite a bit of smoke rolling in on Saturday afternoon.

The road was closed behind the BorderTown Casino?

Was it closed due to local fires, or fire risk?
