Soooo... the long and short of it is that I'm looking to get a truck. New or used it doesn't matter. WHAT DOES matter (in order of importants) is that #1 BE DEPENDABLE/SAFE #2 it should be able to fit a child seat in the back/fit adults comfortably #3 hold a motorcycle in the bed #4 be able to fit a booming ass system in it. I'm not gonna "BRO" it out and turn it into a brodozer or anything. Just keep it simple and stock for the most part. So what says you BARF? I've heard alot of horror stories about domestic brands and nothing but raves from forgien, so any good suggestions or expereinces that may help me to choose would be greatly appreciated. Ohhh yeah I aint ballin either so I'm not looking to spend over 30K(new). :twofinger

99-06 extended cab Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra

I've had zero trouble with either of the two I've had (an 02 and my current 06)

You can get them for dirt cheap, too.

I'm going to sell my 1998 Ford F150 XLT with 116k for roughly $4500. Never, ever, had an issue with it. Come and get it.

I had to look up "brodozer" That's some funny shit.

Sadly I already knew the term. The old term is "California Curb Crawler."

This...

Full size: Ford

Small size: Toyota

is pretty much true. The quality and durability of a smaller pickup, I would have to give the nod to Toyota. The Tacoma is the runaway favorite is the small pickup class. Especially when you see 10+ year old Rangers and S-10s that are just beat to shit. Not saying that I've never seen Tacomas and Frontiers that are roaches, but the domestics don't seem to hold up as well there.

When it comes to full size trucks though, it's totally the other way. Toyota and Nissan are still playing catch up. And doing it with some seriously funky looking trucks. Seems like the Tundra and Titan get uglier everytime they try to redesign them. Full size trucks is what America does better than anyone else. Sure there's always some snob that will come out and say "well a H1 Humvee or a Unimog can totally outwheel any of those." But that's all they do bettter. Today's full size trucks drive amazingly well for what they are, get respectable mileage considering who much they weigh and how much more than can haul, and are surprising very nice inside them.

I personally don't care for the Ram, but it's so feature loaded, it even has built in WiFi available. The top of the line GMC has ass coolers. The King Ranch F-150 looks like they slaughtered a whole field of cows to provide all the leather inside.

For your budget of 30k, you're in great shape. 2011s are coming in. Dealers would like to clear out the '10s and will get even more aggressive with the discounts and low/no interest financing. And they've already been discounting heavily. You could get a true crew cab, but extended cabs these days actually are pretty comfortable even for 6 footers. Really depends on how much you like the doors and how much wheelbase you want to manage. If you're looking to put a massive sub box in the back, extended or crew still gives plenty of room. You could easily score a nicely optioned full sizetruck for under your budget. Not sure if you wanted 4x4, but figure on adding another $3000 to get it.

I bought a late run 03 Ford F150 with the 5.4. Thing halls ass, drive it faster than my patrol car in turns, 90,000+ miles on it and no issues. Rear facing car seats are a problem in it though, have to have one seat almost all the way forward; think Chevy's had more room in the rear. Bike will sit in the bed of any 6 foot bed, with the gate down.

Booming system, better cut the cab and get a trailer:laughing

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE
just bought a toyota tundra and so far so good...not enough miles to evaluate any long term faults...enough power to haul things for the house at ease....and i don't like toyotas either...just found it to be better than some of the other options for my needs..

was going to buy american but after testing out a tahoe (hybrid/regular) for another reason and finding out they were getting sent back to gm for continuous warranty issues, i wasn't impressed...floats and handles like a boat and storage capacity wasn't impressive for something bigger than my MDX....has a stronger motor and brakes than the acura but didn't give much leg room when driving...my knee kept hitting the console...my MDX has well over 110,000 miles with no problems where as the 2 chebbies had less than 30,000 and getting sent back to GM for problems....not impressive at all..

the hybrid cut out on me twice..once on 101 in marin and again in SF...:wtf

and what's with chevy putting "hybrid" all over their suv's..??

Normally I'd recommend a Tacoma. You don't need a full size truck and they're the best of the mid/compact trucks. However, the plastic beds in the new generation absolutely blow. The plastic tie downs are downright dangerous for hauling motorcycles. Defeats the purpose of buying a truck, IMO.

Given that, I'd check out the Ridgeline if you're willing to go non-traditional. If not, test drive Nissan (Frontier), Chevy (Colorado), Ford (Ranger), in that order.

edit: My post is for small trucks (and ridgeline). Rob's post above is spot on for full-size. Chevy is my strong preference, but Fords are good trucks too. Chrysler has had too many major quality and engineering issues over the years for me to trust a Ram, if only because they've ensured there's no resale value to them.

I have a 2010 Ram 1500, fully loaded, and love it. Room for the kid's seat in the back, system, bike in the bed (or 4 if they're dirtbikes), can tow several thousand pounds (car trailer with a camaro on it) w/ 1800 lbs of shit in the bed (Bike plus household goods). PM for pics, but imo the new Dodge Rams have the best looking and most comfortable interior of any of the full size trucks.

Went Tocoma though it is bias. In any case ensure you get a truck with 4x4 capabilities, this has saved my ass a number of times.
