Subject: MNF OHV Closure Order 08-20-03
Importance: High

Thanks to the swift and focused work of Lori Cayo, Christine Hill, Mike Casey, Rachel Birkey (OGC), Michiko Martin (DRF) and Tony Scardina (DRF) we are ready to announce and implement the OHV trail closure order. This order closes 247 miles of motorized trails on the forest. I signed the order today and it will go into effect tomorrow.

I know people have strong opinions on this but in my opinion, if you wanna boycott someone........... do it to the 20 people in line at Dutch Bros and Starbucks getting lattes! We’re living in a world that looks down on me for riding my dirt bike in the mountains while Starbucks and cannabis collectives are essential! Now they’re forcing me to grow essential pot in the mountains to justify riding :twofinger

I get you and understand what you are saying about the activity it self. I'm minutes from all the riding in Mendo and Cow Mtn and sure would like to go riding in my local spots near my home. A little bummed I can't just ride out from my garage for a short ride for some exercise.

But like fishing, boating, surfing, the beaches, and many other things that one might make the same argument could be done safely are being closed down.

Why? I suspect because so many folks are traveling long distances from their homes to do so which greatly increases the risks of spreading the virus and runs counter to the very principle of social distancing and self isolating.

I suspect folks have been doing it in larger groups and not practicing social distancing as well. We've seen it on the beaches, in the parks, and in some of our OHV parks. Lake County shut down the lake in the first weekend due to the influx of out of towners coming into to town with the their boats to go fishing and filling the motels, its was a like a holiday weekend.

Going for a jog or mtn bike in a local park near home on your own or with someone close to you is a bit different than travelling long distances and spending a weekend in groups, especially when those groups are comprised of folks from many different regions in CA. Kinda tough to argue that using any sort of logic if we accept the principles of social distancing.

You can argue the logic of social distancing or its effectiveness, but that's a different argument.

I'm not a social distancing nazi, into public shaming, or turning folks in, I do my own thing. Just guessing as to the logic of the closing and really have no solid insight into it. Like others, I'm bummed I cant ride my local areas safely during this time too. But not surprised and can some what understand.

Trust me, I get it. I’ve been off work for a month and have been riding regularly up until now. I noticed Butch’s link was for So Cal but they issued the same thing for Stonyford. Me and my small circle changed up our system and all started driving separate. Over the last week or so there has been a flood of people riding and rolling in 3 and 4 deep in the same truck. I feel I’m a fairly responsible citizen and you’ll never completely stop stupid people from doing stupid shit. I see no problem with packing a lunch and driving yourself to the mountains to get mental health days practicing throttle therapy.

I'm with you and agree it can be done responsibly. By no means singling you out.. just responding to your post. :thumbup

I don't know, but suspect that there was beginning to be too much evidence of folks doing it irresponsibly which ruined it for the rest. Some folks have some strong opinions at either end of the argument, I'm not one of them.

I'm just hoping to get through this as fast as possible to get things back to some semblance of normal what ever that may look like in the near future. More than riding, the economic impact, myself included, is pretty substantial. My wallet will trump even riding for a short period of time. :laughing

I must research the link provided to me and correct. Or not.

I am bumming, bit this is all a very interesting social... experiment? Further discussion would be for the sink or even the poli sink.

People die from this virus. That has some of my family justifiably concerned. Ya’ know, that death thing.

Funny that all this talk of closing Stonyford relating to the Covid 19 and health concerns. No mention at all of a bunch of riders going up there the week before, trashing the place, riding in areas that were closed, tearing down ribbons and signs asking off roaders to stay out. Speeding up and down the residential part of the road from Stonyford to the camping area despite all the signs the locals have posted next to the road to slow down. Lett’s Lake camping area was all thrashed and ripped up too.
I heard from two forest service people up there and a retired FS guy who used to be in charge of the OHV area and they are pissed about how the riders just ran rough shod over the area just because there was no staffing during that time to keep an eye on things.
I bought land up near there ten years ago because of the great riding and the out of town riders consistently piss off the locals with the “screw them, I came here to have fun at all costs” attitude.
Why do so many idiots who ride motorcycles continually shit in our own nest and then bitch about not having a place to ride or having to travel so far to go play with ORV’s?
I remember being able to ride off road in or very near the Bay Area until the idiots and loud pipes arrived. Heck, snake and horse lovers are not the worst enemy. Once again, we are the worst enemy.
Re-chamber another round fellas, we have another foot to shoot!

Bummer. I grew up riding mountain bikes in Colorado and have started to enjoy dual sport bikes over the past year. Seems anytime dirt and two wheels are involved there's always a contingent that can't manage to respect the land / stay on trails or designated areas. Always pisses me off.
