Northern California Backroads 1,500 mile Moto Adventure Recap

Over labor day weekend I had 5 days to fly by the seat of my pants with my motorcycle. Well, this turned out to be 1,500 miles.

Recap of the roads:

-LavaBeds/TuleLake Circle. Just West of 139 and South of Oregon. I missed the turnoff to SR10 that would have led me to 97. Oh well. https://goo.gl/maps/M7Q66

-Bracketed by SH 139 on the north beginning at Perez and running to SH 89 in the south: FR 97 /49 to 15. This runs North/South. This is all paved. Approx 70 miles
https://goo.gl/maps/OsHx0

-Bracketed by SH 89 on the south and US-97 in the north: 13 paved to 19 North. Runs North/South and East/ West. 18 miles of well maintained gravel/dirt. The 'end' on FR 42N12 road yielded phenomenal sweeper pavement for about 5 miles:

I will state, in this life we are given certain circumstances we have to personally navigat through. These circumstances we can sit and wait through while plopped in front of the TV, video game, computer leaking our life away into technology or get out there and go and make your own adventure while making careful arrangements.

My trip began with the basics to adhere to: Adequate sleep, proper nourishment, rest stops, bike well maintained, proper contacts and AGAT all be adequately proportioned and above all to NOT PUSH THE TRIP. If I felt like resting for the rest of the 4 days, I'd have done it. I don't mean to speak in code. However, I will state, for 40 years I was fighting a virus, which for the most part caused me to get out there and live life because I was not sure how short it may become. Really, how short may any of our lives unexpectedly be ? I didn't really understand how I was affected until I was cured. I was on life-changing meds while on this trip with the side effects really only being positive. Fuck! To experience moto tripping in a new, day-to-day unraveling, glorious way was simply spine-tingling. I wanted to hug and cry because life really became life. Energy became energy. The roads to travel and dream of really became exciting. I poke myself each morning and dance around and say "this is the REAL me". Wahhoo ! Bless two-wheeled therapy !

A few weeks before this trip, someone at a BARF gathering- Jeff, a fellow VStrom rider, gave me the glorious gift of a Triple AAA map of northern California . After a few nights of studying, I realized this map revealed roads my bulky California Road Atlas failed to show. Oh mon dieu ! For the past 8 years I've been unaware ! I guess it's time to catch up !

I , once again, had a sketchy plan of a route for backroads. These roads, much to my abrupt woohoo while ON the turn off to that road, turned out to be gravel which were I will classify as beginner/moderate easy. At first I was a little trepid of what I was to meet ahead, but I was determined to pass through that fear and muscle through it. As the saying goes = There's always time to do it right=. So, I got this.

There were some grades while on the gravel ~ 14% on Mina road, and a few slighter ones on Bald Hills and about 14% on Pattrick creek. I envied the dirtbikers knobbies I met while on this little delightful road. My bike had stock, Trail Wing tires and handled well with a tad skidding.

As one says, the bike is only as good as the rider. Well *ppsshh*, waves hand in the air.... if I can do it on my 475 lb laden Vstrom, anyone can do it.

I was over-electroniced: Two cell phones, a portable 1,300 MaH recharger, spot tracker, Sena, Pandora, cords and cables, straps, Mr. Happy, lip gloss, plenty of munchies, and a glove compartment first aid kit. This was really getting funny. How much shit did I really need ? Anymore and I would become a traveling christmas tree.

Mr. Happy I sadly lost on highway 89 heading up to 13 that morning. It felt similar to Tom Hanks losing Nelson in the movie ' Castaway'. I saw him fly off behind me and lie on the road to become morning roadkill *sniff* I had him for approx. 50 k miles for reminder happiness.

So many enjoyable gravel roads: I come back with dualsport, yes ? *snickers*

I took off after work to make it to Reno for the night, a 3 hour jaunt. Can't beat a 40 buck hotel that turned out to be comfy. My plan the next day was to take 395 North and wing it from there. Love those wings, don't you ? You have to fly in life sometimes. Go for it ! Now where was I? There was a storm passing through North of Susanville so I wasn't sure how I was going to deflect it, if at all. Sometimes feeling the rain again while riding is ... well, just part of riding and adventuring.

The shoe tree: a must stop and leave some of your stinky wears! This'll be on your right as you travel North on 395

ShoeTree1..jpg ShoeTree2.jpg

The list of backroads I took in order were as follows, well, follows through as the pictures get piled in here. I'll try and limit the pics to 7 for each road....:

Highway 139 Runs North South just west of 395. There was a storm passing through so I opted to take 139 instead of heading to Alturas.

I Inadvertently made it into Merrill Oregon because I had to find/get gas. I opted to pass on podunk gas in Adin. My whoops. On my way back into California I decided to detour through the Lavabeds. The golden sea of grass amongst the craggy lava and undulating pavement was a nice alternative to straight 139.The need to head north and get gas was a great benefit because in that time the hailstorm passed through 97 and most of my route was clear (despite being sleeted on for a few miles) . The temperature was in the low 50's brrr... once it was nice not to be sweating.

I made it to McCloud that evening. Most places were booked but I found the Timber Inn right next to the Chevron Station where I tanked up on mocha and a munchie dinner and studying up on the map. The Timber Inn had 50 buck rooms complete with kitchenette and could sleep 8 ! Yipes. They were needing some spiffying up but I couldn't pass the price. That night it was chilly and made it into the 30's. I waylayed taking off in the morning by two hours and left at 10 am so the weather would warm up to 50... well, brr, it was still brrr traveling but exhiliarating.

~~~~~~Shasta is within all these storm clouds , this was the night before I was to travel FR13/19 ~~~~
Wow that's a nice Norcal loop I should try it on my KLR. I suggest Butler maps if your looking for some nice roads to ride, I've had good luck planning with them.
Nice map in your post! :thumbup
Butler maps are cool, but I love AAA maps ...
I have one of those unobtainable Baja Atlases,
but always seem to only pack the AAA map ... :laughing
Will be checking out Bald Hills Road, thanks for the intel ... :party
Northern California 1,500 mile squiggly Obscure ride recap
2. FR 13/19 ~ Runs North/South between 89 and Interstate 97 just above Weed. This was 18 miles of gravel/dirt. Phenomenal view of Shasta as it had just snowed the night before. I was the only traveler on this road for a Friday holiday !! ....
4. There was so much traffic headed to the coast on Saturday I opted to find Patrick creek Road just west of 199. First I had to fill up and made the trek into Oregon once more to Cave Junction and fill up on Chevron gas.
Patrick road was 19 miles of gravel and met with total of 9 dirtbikers and great views. This runs between the town of Patrick Creek on 199 and O'Brien, OR. Two dirtbikers passed me at the mouth of the gravel road as I was contemplating YES/NO. I inquired for road details. They said a bunch of information too quick for my ears but I remembered "stay left and stay left" and my smile grew bigger . During my solo jaunt up and around the mountain I kept running into left turns and kept thinking "turn here ?" Luckily I held off and came to the sun-baked , hardly legible sign. AH, this is what he meant.
5. I wanted to check out FR 427/15 but fires in the area closed off this section. This is a North/South road . This is partially paved and leads into gravel. Starts at 199 and ends in beautiful Kalamath on the 101. Well, guess It'll be another trip plan !
I passed a huge firefighters camp near Hiouchi. Ruh roh. Hmm... so, I stopped at a local motel to inquire about routes and closeures. The man led me to some people next door who couldn't shed any more light. Well I tried.
I spent the night in Crescent City. Read the map some more for next -days travels and bulked up on some good Mexican food. I asked some people at the bar about surrounding roads and FR 427/15. They did state it was open up to the 15 as far as I knew. I found a good website that evening that gave me uptothedate news on fires.
http://www.arcgis.com/apps/PublicInformation/index.html?appid=4ae7c683b9574856a3d3b7f75162b3f4
moar Bald Hills please !
In the morning I decided to make the short jaunt to Hiouchi again. Particularly wanted to travel through the shaded and towering redwoods while enjoying a pristine paved 199. Yahooo ! This time I wasn't behind a fire truck and I was able to lean into some turns to cut off my squares. *makes motorcycle noises* I talked to some men in a firetruck who gave me news on 429. It was closed at the 15. :( . Back I went through Crescent City and down the coast.
6. Bald Hills Road ~ Runs East /West just above Orick on 101 and over to Weichpec on Highway 96. 40 miles of road with 15 miles or so of gravel and phenomenal views.
WHAT a road !! There was a steep grade on either end of the road, moreso on the Orick side. Many travelers were parked at the cramped state park entrance but not many vehicles past that. I stopped near the forestry station as two guys in a truck stated Bald Hills was good gravel. I spoke to a park employee also who was emptying the trash and he admitted he hadn't traveled that road but thought the gravel may be a little treacherous. Ok, strike that conversation from my record.
A must stop for a fresh of the tree/out of the ground snack. It's been here for 40 years. This is just a few miles before you hit 299. I inquired about area roads. I was given not quite true FR 1 road tips (stated mostly gravel and that it would be probably boring as it was straight and ran across a ridgetop..... heh, OBVIOUSLY he wasn't a motorcyclist ;))
Looks like a great ride. Bald Hill is awesome, one of my favorites and so beautiful to boot. I'll have to check out Patrick Creek, too. Thanks for the report.
Agreed! I would love to go to Bald Hills again but this time take the opposite direction !
Sometimes a road reveals better views/ experiences traveled in one direction than another
My mom lives in Brookings so I visit her twice a month or so. I'll have to ride it both ways and report back.
I have some choice roads up there, shoot me a message that next time you head north. :ride
7. FR 1 ~ Runs North/South between Highway 299 and highway 36. All paved. Great views as well. here was a 10k acre burn was put out 5 days ago . Phew. skeleton trees and extinguished campfire smell all around with views of other fires happening in the area. The road undulates from wide to skinny and trees clogging the roadside at times. Watch for wildlife as they are rearranging their homes.
After I connected to the 36 I headed West. FYI: There is Patriot gas at this junction. I stopped at Van Duzen Road as this had piqued my curiosity while looking at the map the night before. However, it was approx. 3 in the afternoon and I was unsure of just where I wanted to go if I made it down that way. I would be pushing the daylight hours and I'd rather start it in the morning hours.
As I sat looking at my paper map and using googlemaps to route the time , 5 riders popped out of Van Duzen, all wearing Aerostiches. Dang, missed picture opportunity ! I think we represented the wide color spectrum. They were in a group but all had their different paces as seen as they arrived about 5 minutes apart from each other. They had trucked their bikes down a ways from Portland to Grants Pass as their starting place and were touring for the 3 day weekend. They reported Van Duzen and Zenia Bluff rd , just north of Peak Road, were super pavement. After some mulling over I decided to head to Fortuna and have a good dinner at the Eel River Brewery.
I spent the night in cozy but full from going-home-holiday-traffic in Fortuna . Love the hotel with a gas station next door so one can zip on out and away to a day's adventure ! I had a scrumptious dinner at the Eel River Brewery (with 13 thousand check-ins who can go wrong ??)
The Lost Coast I ran from North To South from Ferndale, through Honeydew and onto Garberville. I stopped at the HoneyDew Store and had a lunch snack. A couple gave me advice on FH7~ East/West. This, the man stated, was 40 miles of great gravel leading from Covelo to Newville/ Orland on the I-5. Awesome. I would contemplate that road later and see if I could fit it in to my schedule.
Lunch and a break in Honeydew *nom nom* This was just before my bike took a dirt nap on the steep gravel 90 degree turn upgrade onto Briceland.
The key is to leave late enough in the morning/ travel early afternoon . Too late in the evening a couple hours before sunset/ a couple hours after sunrise and the Lost Coast is socked in with fog which obscure the views.
No pic(s) of bike dirt nap, I am disappoint. :x
Nice Erica's, too. Any pics of them at full dark illuminating the road, or did I miss that? :teeth
Not trying to be an a$$ here, but would you get better illumination by turning the lights in a bit to get more central a beam?
I passed through Briceland and filled up in Garberville, snacked and watered myself and gassed my backroad machine. Alder point road broke right and lead to Peak road. This was craggy with a portion of gravel. This lead east/west to the wee Kettenpom store with Patriot gas. The weather fluxuated from the 80's to 90's as I headed inland. Water, water... ooh, water.
The road directions to Kettenpom were nonexistent. However, Siri happened to squeak out at the right point where to turn. Heh, I thought I lost service but winding up through the hills proved different. Only a few cars were on this road. Neat
At Kettenpom I picked the brain of the attendant about the road surface of Mountain Road turning on to Mina Road and on to Covelo. One lady gave the washboard- rough road news in a 'negative tone' and so I thought, no, I wont take it. The attendant spun it in a different light but hadn't taken the road in a year and only went as far as a certain point.
She helped me reform my opinion to take it. So glad I did!
Here I was there in the early afternoon, at the mouth of my intended road to allow myself time to 'fudge' if it so happened and the more likely people would be along the way to assist.
We'll, I stated to the attendant, you might see me later on today if I decide to turn back. She allowed me to fill up my waterbottle with hose-water. All the better indeed ! She also gave me positive vibes on FH7.
20 miles of gradually degrading pavement and 18 miles of gravel.
Along the way I met a guy and two kids on their dirtbikes just as I reached the gravel section. Yes, I found the washboard was yuck in places. I inquired while on paved to a guy who appeared to be out with his family how the road was and if he felt it was doable on my bike. He took one look and said, no problem, but to watch out for the couple of grades. Yes, a little sketchy with rear wheel slippage but not bad. I ate a few rounds of dust as cars passed going the opposite direction. *cough cough* *blink blink*
