Splitter Encounters CHP

Prime Example:

Just because you CAN split, doesnt mean you SHOULD.

Yes, it he might get cut off being on the left, but that doesnt change the fact that it is DUMB to do what he did.

See even CHP make unsafe lane changes. Trying to go enter a lane without checking for traffic.

He assumed there would be no one there. Not good to make assumption like that in traffic.

If the CHP was surprised, this just means he was not paying attention to the traffic but more concern about where he was going.

While that was a bit of an illegal lane change in which the CHP didn't change lanes, wait, check to make sure the shoulder is clear and then proceed there .. He did have his lights on ... Which makes it probably legal what he did?

But yeah, the rider should have saw this and this is a prime reason why you don't split on the right of cars.. No one expects you there.

for 7 years I took the same on ramp. if you dont split it could take you 5-10 min

I have been stopped and told not to split there(at first portion of onramp where panhandler was). I just look out for chp and do it anyway.

he could have slowed once traffic got rolling again.

looks like chip was diving into the shoulder to get pass traffic.

my point: his delta was too high. should have saw chp

I thought for sure cop would ticket him. This outcome would be different if the cop was a dick. Not in a good mood

Surprised at no ticket also.

I never split between the slow lane and the shoulder...and thankfully have never had to "split" on a single lane on ramp as the ones around here are not very long.

I thought "splitting" either to the left or right when there is a single lane of traffic was illegal.

Was that even legal splitting?

No way legal... even on the left on sharing the same lane in a one lane condition is not legal as I understand it.

It is better and I have been addressed for it by a LEO. :afm199

What you gonna do officer when a car move into the bike lane and waves you by?? :teeth

Out of curiosity, what part about that is illegal? I thought as long as you are within the lane markings, it is legal. Smart...no, but with no actual law on the books (yet) I thought it just wasn't defined.

Zoinks!!!!
The reason lane "sharing" is legal is because there is nothing codified that defines how many vehicles can occupy the same lane at the same time. Thus, a car next to a motorcycle is the same thing as a motorcycle next to another motorcycle (assuming they are both within the same lane).

There is nothing saying that 1 lane sections make it illegal. It might not be the smartest thing to do, but it's not explicitly illegal.

As for the rider's actions in the video, it's hard to judge speed based on the video. It looked like some of that might have been too fast for conditions (in violation of 22350 VC), but I'm not exactly sure since I wasn't there to see it in person.

So I was punked by the law? :laughing

I wonder if the new law will affect that as I believe it states between two lanes of traffic. Have to look that up.

Yup. Two or more in one direction.
Heck I just learned it is not illegal to share a one lane. :rant
I knew in committee when the CHP wanted it to be splitting instead of sharing we would find something negative about the name.

Thanks AB51. :thumbdown

I thought Nick was a Capricorn ;)

It'll be interesting to see if the new law eliminates that because there are certainly some on-ramps that allow plenty of room for a motorcycle to scoot by in the same lane and I've done it plenty of times before.

Only problems I see in the video is the speed delta is a bit fast and the rider puts himself in a terrible place between traffic and that big cement wall. The shoulder is there for a car to pull onto if they have an emergency and being between them and that space is asking for what happens in the video. Luckily the CHP seemed to see him and stopped before completely taking him out. I think most drivers would not have even looked and the rider would have been pushed to the wall or even over it.

LEO was cool. Passing on the right is a dick move in my book. Dangerous to you and it just serves to piss-off those you're passing.

Is this one of those fish-lens style vids that makes it look faster? I split aggressively, and this video made me nervous.

CHP officer was prettycool.
