South Coast Ridge Rd

How do you get to it from Hwy 1?

Plasket Ridge Rd is gated, right?

Do I take Los Burros Rd or is there a way up via San Simeon?

Thanks,

There are two main ways to access South Coast Ridge Road.

The first is off 1 from Los Burros. I generally take that route. You're going uphill mostly, which is less intimidating.

The other way is off Nacimiento-Fergusson. At the very top, before you start heading down into Fort Hunter Liggett, it goes off to the right. To the left is Cone Peak Rd, which is gated (I'm not sure how far you can go before you hit the gate, though).

From 1 to N/F it's about 23 miles of dirt IIRC. There are off shoots that you can explore, the majority of which are dead ends. Those would add to the mileage.

Gas is available about a mile south of the entrance from hwy 1 in Gorda. It is most likely THE MOST EXPENSIVE gas in all of California, so top off in Carmel before heading south so you can avoid getting robbed in Gorda. Or at least limit the robbery to a light top off.

Perfect! Just the info I needed. Planning a route from South San Jose to Pinnacles through Big Sur. I want to hit as much dirt as possible.

S on Hwy 1 taking a detour at Coast Rd
Back onto Hwy 1 to Los Burros and up South Coast Ridge Rd to the top of N-F Road
Down through Fort Hunter Liggett to 101 at King City
N on 101 to Gloria Rd
Up and over Gloria/La Gloria to 25
Then south a bit to Pinnacles

Sound right?

Probably a 250 mi with only 50 mi of dirt, but we take what we can get. Thanks for the tip about the gas.

Prewitt Ridge is beautiful on clear days. Me and my daughter camped up there 2 years ago and we road all over there. If you head south from Prewitt Ridge campground and take the first spur on the left, it will lead to a road that is as wide a 2 lane highway on top of a ridge heading east. Its graded, fast paced and alot of fun.

Wow I was near that area twice this year and missed it. I'll have to check it out sometime. I've been to Prewitt Ridge that's a pretty nice ride and camping, but a LOTTA little flies when its warm I think. There's some silt in some places.

I don't know the gas at Shoshone near death valley was $5+, more than actually in death valley.

I rode to Cone Peak and Prewitt Ridge earlier this year good fun. I enjoyed Cone Peak more because I could slide a bit around the corners =)

Here's some video of Prewitt Ridge

I actually went to Indian Rd on my last trip which is north of FT Hunter Ligett. Nice easy dirt road in a canyon. There are free campground there but the road that goes to Carmel Valley was locked because of fire damage. Here's my ride report of that section, it may be open now not sure though:

I went to pull a map and realized it was Prewitt Ridge I was heading south from. Anyways it was also really, really windy in the evening. This was probably a seasonal thing.
