soft bags and theft at hikes/campgrounds

For all of you with soft luggage, is there a big issue with theft of the bags or goods inside?

Back east i used softbags and a magnetic tank bag and never had an issue, even in nyc. SF I can understand not leaving that around but what about outside, like if i went hiking mt diablo? or mt tamalpais.

Would my motorcycle boots be ok in my bag? would my magnetic tank bag go missing? Am i just overthinking it? I can't cable lock everything but trying to have reasonable risk taking.

I've never had an issue, but it can be one. The last time I hiked off of Calaveres Rd, there were signs all over the parking lot about break ins. The ranger told me that recently there had been a rash of break ins all over the East Bay parks. They were nice enough to let me park at the maintenance yard. I guess any urban/suburban hikes there's going to be a risk. That said, further out in the Sierra I've gone on multiple multi-hour hikes and left all of my gear on the bike, relatively unsecured and came back to find it just as I had left it.

Ten years ago around here I would've said take your hike and don't give a another thought about it.....however as of late, there is a part of me that's a little surprised even my bike is still there when I get back.
Fate, don't tempt it. Weird stuff happens where it never used to.
