Snapped rear sprocket bolt

ToxicMark

The dose makes the poison
Hey all,

I'm looking for ways to extract a snapped rear sprocket bolt from the hub of the wheel.

It's a factory bolt that had never been unscrewed. 2007 DR200. I guess they paint those with some serious loctite.

Should I try hitting with my mini torch to melt the loctite before using left-hand twist drill bits (or an extractor)?

Any shops that are really good at dealing with this kind of thing?

Thanks,
-Mark

I put a dimple in the center already.

Do more, bitch less.
Looks pretty simple, nice and large. Just drill it out? Bonus points for reverse-thread like you already mentioned.

Not sure how bearings react to a torch, I'd probably avoid that at first.

Bought a 97 1200s from a good friend of mine about two weeks ago. Finally got a good day of weather to do some detailing and noticed that my washers on the rear sprocket were loose. Went to torque them back and "pop"... broke off in the rim...

After I stopped cussing I called a buddy of mine that had his own shop and we trailered it up an popped it up on the rack. Ends up FOUR of the five sprocket bolts were snapped in the rim and the fifth required the hammer of the gods to break loose. Two of the screws we could back out with a lefty drill bit and then on the other two... "pop"... broke the bit in the screw... Then when we were re-threading the holes... "pop"... broke the tap...

Ordered reverse twist bits and a bolt extractor set, but got impatient waiting for them to arrive so I took the wheel to Glenn at Spec-1. He got it out clean. Great guy, great shop, great service. He said it took a ton of heat.
