Smushed foot... normal healing time?

I was rolling to a parking spot and cut the ignition maybe 10ft away, going maybe 10mph... then i tapped the shifter into 1st by accident and the rear locked. I caught the bike and didn't slam to the ground, but had to bail when the bike got so low I couldn't lift it. I tried to move my left foot away, but apparently it wasn't enough since as I rolled off the left side of the bike and laid it down, my left foot got smushed.

Nothing broken as far as I can tell, but it's been about 3 weeks and the foot still has a dull pain when pressed from the side [pinky toe side]... There was never any swelling or bruising so guesing maybe the tendons/ligamanets got smushed. I can still wiggle all toes. I can move pinky sideways a bit, but not as much as I can move my right pinky... Can't remember if that's how it was before. Is that normal? I'm left handed and right footed... I hurt my wrist before when falling off my bicycle and it took months... so wonder if this is same...

thanks for any widsom :thumbup

I mashed my foot pretty good riding dirt in some tight trees. Purple toes and all but nothing broken. It took a few months to stop aching. I say give it a few more weeks , if its still acting funky times to get it checked out.

still hurts a week after...then get it cut off. :rofl:rofl

no really, should take a couple three months, even a bone bruise can take up to six + months to stop hurting.

give it time and do as your Dr says. take some norco if a problem. (works for me). but then i am 53 and a ball of pain, from a life of fun. :teeth

Good info, thanks ppl. I had one of those pangs the other day as Oldblade mentions. I was wondering if I should get an x-ray... If its covered under my insurance I think its better to be safe than potentially risk long term damage. Maybe a metatarsal got crunched or something.

I will Google bone bruises too... Thanks.

Definitely look into a podiatrist. I had my foot get run over and sucked up into a wheel well one time and it took over a year to get back to normal. I had the same dull pain in my foot as you are having and it was caused by trauma to the cartilage. I went to a podiatrist where I was given custom orthopedic insoles that made a huge difference. I had lived with the pain for 10 months before I went to seek help(mostly because my girlfriend at the time was tired of giving me foot rubs). I noticed that I started shifting more of my weight to my other leg and soon began to notice hip pain as I overused my left leg. Within 2 months of care, I had made major progress and my foot no longer ached at the end of the day.

I soon got back into running and jump roping which would have led to mild pain after 15 minutes without the insoles. I can't stress enough that you should seek help if your situation does not improve within 3 months. I had gone to UCSF the same day to have an x-ray taken and nothing was broken or fractured.

This was actually day 2. I could barely get my foot out of my shoe on day 1.

ouch, I'm in the same boat here (not the advice boat). Got my foot caught against the peg during a hard stop, dropped the clutch cover on it. Broke the fall of the bike... and possibly some bones. Hard to say. I kept icing it and wrapping it in compression bandages, started to get better after 5-6 days, but by the 7th day it was getting worse again.. get these occasional flare-ups of sharp pain on the outside of my foot where I landed on the pavement.

I have a long trip on the bike planned for a month from now, so can only hope I'm able to ride and walk comfortably again by then.

No insurance or money to see a doc and get an xray, so just hoping for the best.

I'd get checked out and x-rayed, preferably by an actual podiatrist, not just a generalist. Go to the local county ER if not insured; bring a book and a lunch and settle in for the wait, but it's worth making sure nothing is busted or torn, it may save time and pain in the end.

Lisfranc displacements (metatarsal dislocation from the tarsal bones in the middle of the foot) can lame you for years if not caught and stabilized. Some minor ones don't even break bones, but still cause tendon and ligament damage that needs support and/or repair to heal.

In the meantime, rest, elevation, and ice will bring comfort, and ibuprofen can help a bit with swelling as well.

I am going on 2 + years braking my foot at Thill with pain. I am used to it pretty much by now. I think it has to do more with nerve damage then anything else. Getting old sucks

Without swelling or discoloration a fracture is unlikely. You could have done some damage to soft tissue and be suffering from an inflammatory response in which case the standard treatment is rest, ice, elevation and anti-inflammatories on a schedule (i.e. ibuprofen). If it persists > 6 weeks you should probably see a podiatrist. Hope you heal soon and that your bike isn't in to bad of shape.
