Short person ISO SUMO

Folks, I'm on the hunt for a sumo for my wife.

She's short... 5'

I'm not adverse to lowering links and limiting suspension for street use only... which is what this bike will be relegated to.

I'm looking for experience or advice on which one to do it to? She's an accomplished street rider with about 4 years of dirt under her belt now.

I'm not looking to convert a mini MX bike, and I'm looking for street ability. I'll trade "high strung" for "bullet proof".

I will throw money at it though.

...ready... BEGIN!

I got a friend who's pretty vertically challenged selling a very clean 2001 yammy xt225. interested?

The CRF230M and KLX250SF are quite low stock. And quite slow.

The WR250X is better, and has good hot-rod parts available (including a big bore). I had to shift a cheek to get a foot down, though, so if that's a no-go, it's a no-go.

Why does it have to be a sumo? There are a lot of good shortie-friendly standards...

Shifting a cheek is doable. She does that on her NT650 and M900. But damn 'gal, 35" seat height! I don't remember if you remember, but we're short asians... kinda redundant, I know.

Why supermoto? For you to even ask this question...:wtf I don't even know who you are anymore :x

I thought longer travel suspension would allow me to lower it without losing too much travel (for the street).

I love my sumo and I wanted to build one for her.

I was hoping I could still get reasonable travel with a low seat height combined with a monster motor... This is looking to be unreasonable... of course. :rant

At this rate I'll have to bolt something together out of a mash of parts... and I'm not good at that. :laughing

Maybe if I could get the seat hight down to 32" ... ?

Another DR650? 33" with factory lowering and another inch with dogbones. Plus the reduced height from 17s.

Another DR650?

He said he wanted monster motor. :twofinger

Really, though, monster motor doesn't go with sumo, unless you're getting one of those fancy Euro 'tards that generally don't come cheap (or low maintenance), or a standard that's pretending to be a supermoto. I still think the latter sounds like a good option for her for street use. Want to sit on my Versys for a height check? I put on a light-person rear spring (the stock rear spring is meant for big dudes, and the stock bikes don't compress at all when I sit on them) and altered the seat. Hardly a monster motor, but more go than most actual SMs, and bulletproof.

...or you could take an XR650L, put on a big bore and pumper carb, and slam it. It'd be a monster tractor, but lots of torque.

I had her sit on a WR250x... I think it could work.

The DR is a pig... so is the Xr... and though the hyper is just 32.5" at the seat , its' too wide.

Relatively I agree... to a degree.

I thought about hopping up a crf230m for all it's worth, but that turned out to be not too much. I'm currently looking into hopping up the wr... for if/when the time comes.

it makes almost as much powa as my V. :teeth

Which would be a great engine for a powerful, reliable and streetable motard if they would stuff it in a dirtbike chassis. Some dude stuffed one in a KLR. And there is that SXV frankentard out in the wild somewhere.

The most important part i dont see mentioned here - What is the intended use?

That will narrow it down quite a bit

If it must be a street bike that almost eliminates all the real cool stuff. I don't think there is a 225-250cc based machine that is worthy of anything otherthan in town / local commuting. back roads. But most peeps grow out of those soon. The first time an 18 wheeler blows by you up a hill on the freeway and sends you to the shoulder you'll want more than 20hp.

BTW, any bike can be lowered to accomodate a 5 footer and if your not spending time off road, MX type travel is not really neccesary

Rob,

I have a set of lowering links for the DRZ-400E/S/SM that I am not using. Come pick it up if you need them. Free.
