So, I put up an ad on craigslist to sell our goldwing with a sidecar. this morning I received the following in an email:
I've seen your add. are you the first owner and is it your final price ? I don't check the email for Craig's List , So text me at --:>Larry.jbelectricalservices4263@gmail.com
I responded back, answering both questions. I just received this in response (from a different email address):
Thank you so much for your response, I've been working really long weeks at work so I won't be able to meet with you before purchase, but am ok with the price and condition as shown on the advert, I'll proceed in issuing a check to you and when you receive the payment and it clears, I will make arrangement for pickup. So get back to me with below details asap.

Full name :
Physical Address (Only,not po box):
City, State, Zip:
Your cell Phone Number:
Deal Price:

As soon as this is provided, payment will be deliver to you in 48hrs I will let you know then tracking number of the package. I will also add an additional $50 for keeping other buyers off till my check gets to you, also please delete the posting or mark as sold.

Thanks and I hope we handle this in good faith while waiting to hearing from you.

To me it smells like a scam - I'm tempted to just ignore it but thought I'd ask for advice on the best way to handle this. Do I give out the information requested, or ignore it? Maybe respond saying that I will only complete the deal in person, with cash in hand - no checks?

My coworker has his 08 CBR600RR on Craigslist and he spent a good amount of time yesterday getting texts from a guy who had no interest in the bike but felt it necessary to let him know it was priced too high and has probably been crashed and repaired :rolleyes

For the record, it's a really clean bike with like 14k miles.

Don't ever do anything that isn't exactly the way you want to do it. Every deviation is a red flag and the first red flag was to text him because he doesn't check email. Oh okay well I don't give out my phone number to dildos on CL. Don't even respond to those.

If you proceed with this, take the check to the bank it's written on and cash it with them and get cash. If it's not a bank in your area, I would not let the bike be picked up until you're certain it cleared and you're past the time it can be reversed (I don't know the amount of time), ask the teller at your bank about details.

It's possible he's on the level, but it's more likely he's not.

Thanks everyone - you confirmed my gut feelings! I thought it was funny that he said to text him, but then gave me an email address!

Rather than try to pull his chain I'm just going to ignore him...

Well, he said "advert", that right there is scam wording. :)

I've had the offshore oil rig scam thing ... the buying a bike for my son in college thing (I wanted to believe that one, but the bike was not something a college kid would want) ... I wonder what % of their attempts ends up with them getting some money?

Ha!
Really, we gotta take these responses to for sale stuff with humor. Everything, everything slightly fishy is a scam and we ned to laugh and move on...

Unless it is particularly funny and then you must share with the community. Some are really funny. We got one from a Nigerian Prince of Chocolat.

Seriously

It's also my understanding that cashiers checks can be canceled, and those funds pulled back.

I'll repeat what I said a few months ago, Alan.
Hang on to that thing.
....and now the universe is telling you the same thing.

Of course it's a scam! We had a rental where a person in England said they had a job near the the rental and sent a Post Office cashiers check for the full rent. The said the job fell through and keep $500 and send the balance back. We took it to the Post Office to check to see if was a scam, and yes it is. Sad part is if you deposit it the bank will honor it till it bounces and you're on the hook for any money spent against it!

I've sold 5 or 6 bikes on craigslist and jus need to have it priced right and wait for someone with the cash in hand!

Yup. A Nigerian trick. Never accept a cashier's check on a craigslist sale.

Cash only has been my policy. Both ways. And meeting in person at a Starbucks.

Not just obviously a scam, but likely a bot as well. Notice how all these scam replies never mention anything specific about the item for sale, just vague references. I recently sold a car on cl and got tons of these bot scam emails.

I've given up on Cl when comes to selling, ebay gives us a safety net, annoying fees and all. im slowly warming up to Offer up. OP,you should forward that email to James Veitch. he'll bring that guy to his knees.....
