Daimler Trucks this week unveiled what it said is the world's first licensed 18-wheel semi-tractor trailer that can drive itself.
Daimler unveiled the new 18-wheeler yesterday during a ceremony at the Hoover Dam.

The Freightliner Inspiration Truck, a concept truck, underwent extensive testing, Daimler said, before the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles granted it a license to operate on public roads in the state. This past year, the truck was driven more than 10,000 miles during a test in Germany.

So many questions I'd like to ask the engineers ..

What happens when a car in front of it just stands on the brakes for no reason? Does it swerve? Come to a stop?

What happens if somebody decides to slow down to a stop in front of it, park the car, and proceed to steal the contents from the trailer in the middle of nowhere?

I'm willing to bet it can respond to the first situation as well as, or better then, a human driver. I've been saying for several years that autonomous vehicles will revolutionize long-distance trucking before they gain wide consumer acceptance

SKRRRRRRRRRRRT!!!!!!
i dont see this working. i dont think our infrastructure is as good as germany's. maybe im wrong :dunno sure things will go well in nevada with 3 million people in the entire state but around the bay area and out on the major highways? i could see them being more of a hazard especially being that most major highways are only 2 lanes.

And get you home in 30 minutes or less. Possible only if the cars talk to each other like in Minority Report and can zip on the freeway at 85 mph+

Lowering my expectations
Wonder how they will fix the problems with the fucking retards who do not know how to merge on the freeway...it is the biggest problem I have when driving my rig which is 65ft overall.

OTR longhaul trucking is a shit job, it is getting very hard for them to find decent people to do the job, as soon as they can automate it they will!

Just because a self driven truck is being driven by something that is better at driving, than a human....

Doesn't mean there is no human in that truck, that can defend the truck.

you could do that with a driver init too. But I guess that would be a burglary, not an armed robbery.
