Seattle man builds fence around car-share vehicle

A Seattle man took exception to a car-share vehicle that was parked without permission at his duplex. So he built a fence around it.

...

He wants Share Now, the company that operates car2go, to pay $65 a day in storage fees, $300 for the fence and up to $500 for “harassment fees.”

I find this amusing. No way he gets his asking price though, be interested to see what comes of this.

Fuck off
Pix?? Why didn't he just call a friggin' tow truck?

In the day and age of going viral for things like this, I'm sure that had more to do with it than anything. Calling a tow truck would have been the easiest and most proper way, but then we wouldnt have this article and pics, would we ?!?! :laughing :laughing

Pretty sure these cars are point to point rentals, there is no set place to pick them up or drop them off, you rent it, drive where you are going, and leave it there. So someone rented the car and then dropped it in a private lot.

From their website
Grab a car2go from anywhere on the street, then drop it off anywhere on the street in the operating area.

Also they are a Mercedes subsidiary and maybe the Property manager knows that so hes hoping they will just pay up to get the car back or stop bad publicity.

Funny as it is, he's kind of a dick for doing it so immediate and not giving them a fair shake at removal.

Agreed 100%, the action he took was petty AF.

However, one of the articles I read had a statement from the company saying they tell owners if the car needs to be moved immediately, the owner needs to tow it and the company will pass the cost on to the customer that parked it last. In other words, they really don't care whether or not it moves, and it's up to the person being inconvenienced (property owner, in this case) to deal with it. And he did! :laughing

I don't get why petty is thrown around as an insult. I take great pleasure in petty actions.

Not at all. That's not his job. I came home from the track once to find my driveway blocked by a large truck with a trailer. It took me almost 24 hours to get it removed. I did not and still do not give a fuck about why it was there. It blocked my driveway.

I hope you never have to go through this. It's actually hard to get vehicles towed these days. Most tow outfits won't accept a job unless you can prove you are the owner of the vehicle. In Oakland I could not find a tow company to remove a vehicle blocking my driveway. Eventually I managed to get the cops involved and a tow authorized. But it wasn't quick. It was 24 hours.

Me, too. This is just an extension of the abandoned rental scooter shit all over our cities. No sense of responsibility. No care about other people's property or rights.

This is private property. I think he can sue for a more, if he can prove danger to health and/or inconvenience to residents. I hope the egocentric driver pays up the bottom for this selfish indiscretion.

...driver ...

I finally read the OP's article. The details are important.

It seems there is some merit to this since "the driver is not there" (and he knows that NONE of the tenants parked it on the property..<-- unless that's the game. )

So he blames the official signage bearer... Sure, why not? We'll see: play signage games, win signatory prizes???

No shit. It's horrible here. In the first two years of roll out so many scooters littered the lots around our schools something had to happen and what happened was magic sauce.

"Bird paid around $40,000 for the release of 1,800 scooters in November, and the company says in the suits that Scooter Removal currently has around 2,500 of Bird scooters and 1,300 Lime scooters in its possession and is demanding tens of thousands of dollars for their return.

More specifically, the Bird suit says the price is $30 per scooter for their release, not including “storage” fees that tally up by the day. (Bird says its scooters are worth around $950 each.) And the battle between Bird, Lime, and Scooter Removal has apparently been going on for awhile. One passage in Lime’s lawsuit—a similar version of which appears in Bird’s—suggests that the scooter startups did some private surveillance."

I kinda love it but it raises more questions about who is on right side of law. Interesting views:

Lime repeatedly told Defendants their wrongful towing and impound of Lime Vehicles violates the Vehicle Code.

I'd love to hear from the LEOs if they think these scooters are actually considered "vehicles" and subject to the VC.

Folks at Bird don't even call them vehicles so kind of missing that strategy:
The people of San Diego are being bamboozled by a local tow company scheme. Scooter Removal aka ScootScoop, orchestrated by Talon Auto Adjusters, is unlawfully impounding micro-mobility devices...

Micro-mobility devices? GTFO!

As for the guy who built the fence, his only shortcoming was not electrifying it :)

If I'm not mistaken, he drove those posts into the driveway, which he doesn't own.

He could find himself getting a huge bill for damaging the asphalt.

Whoever left the car there was a dick.

The article makes it sound like it is "his" property. :dunno

SEATTLE (AP) — A Seattle man took exception to a car-share vehicle that was parked without permission at his duplex. So he built a fence around it.

Dan Smith told KIRO-TV he doesn’t know who parked the car2go Mercedes May 17, but it wasn’t one of his tenants. He contacted Share Now, the company that operates car2go, and gave them two hours to move the vehicle. A few hours after that, he erected the barricade, preventing other customers from using it.

Thanks for that link. Great story. The author however states this:
What I know for sure is that scooters are here to stay, and Bird and Lime clearly need to find a way to keep them from becoming a nuisance, if they’re inspiring efforts like Scooter Removal’s.
Why the hell are scooters here to stay? They have banned segways in many cities. We have laws against skateboards. Are we stuck with dysfunctional government doing nothing because people are going brain dead?

Ban these things, or at least make them safe and demand they be returned to proper racks. You could easily program the scooters, so that you must put it back in a rack before it releases your charge card. I mean - come on. We legislate all kinds of crap, every year. All cars must now have back-up cameras, for instance. I am going to send a note to my elected representatives and see what response I receive. I will post about it, later.
