School me on porsches (718 cayman S)

Thinking of picking up a slightly used '17-'19 718 Cayman S for a DD. I know nothing about porsches and have never driven or owned one.

Does anyone here own one and have any comments? It looks like the main complaint is porsches decision to go with a 4 banger in an otherwise great car. Are there specific options that you guys think are must haves? I really just want the sport exhaust.

Yes I've heard "the only people who buy a 718 are people who can't afford a 911". I can go a few years back and get a 911 if it truly is that big of a difference although my driving is very mundane so I most likely wouldn't be utilizing the 911 (or even the 718 for that matter)

I currently have an '18 530e for perspective.

If you’re worried about other people looking down on you for buying a Porsche with the engine in the proper place, you may want to reconsider your priorities.

A 911 with its rear engine is really different from any other car. Really, nothing like it. I did not care for it so I sold my 76 Carrera 3.0 and bought a 914. Then I put a six in it. Really a fun car.

Someone told me it really sounds good, but I don’t really care about that.

Hmmm... maybe I’ll drive it up Mt Hamilton today.

Regular maintenance is a little pricey, but the cars are super reliable. The only issue my 911 has had in 70k miles is cracked boots on the ignition coils. And for some reason it eats rear tires super fast, but that may have a lot to do with my heavy foot.

The 718 is a great looking car and really fun. The backlash over the 4 cylinder might mean you can find some pretty good deals. The quality of Porsches is top notch and you won't find any cars that can rival the luxury feel of the interior as well as seemingly uncompromising attachment to the road.

Not to too familiar with the 718 options, but if they have the sport/soft electronic suspension adjust as an option I would definitely try to get that.

This. Buy it because you absolutely love driving it, not because you'll look cool, because if you weren't cool before you drive one you sure won't be any cooler while you drive one.

Can't speak to the new ones but I have only good things to say about the first gen Boxster.

Isn't the 911 the better daily driver. Maybe that base 911 compared to the GT4.
Sweet cars either or. If I bought the 4cyl I'd always be wishing I'd bought a 6.

I have an 02 911 and it is a great car. Porsches are super reliable and super sturdy!

I've heard the same about their reliability and build quality :thumbup

Not so much as perception as it is the actual pleasure of driving

My friends who are car guys had similar feedback about 911's

even though I have always fantasized about owning a Porsche I still drive a Miata!

:cool

Good to know. I'm used to having BMWs so I'm fairly acclimated to more expensive leaning services. I'll definitely look into the suspension adjustment

As mentioned above, wasn't about the perception but more if the pleasure of driving it is miles ahead.

The miami blue and whatever that orange-ish color have me drooling :cool

Wait for the 4.0 next year. Or get a 4 banger if they take a big depreciation hit with the new motor. Or get a 981 for its sweet 6 at a big discount from what a new 4.0 will cost you. But I think buying a near new 718 right now isn't a great play.

I didn't know they were doing an LCI in 2020. Or do you mean for 2021?

A lot of nice cars in that price range though. Would be fun shopping.

I'm looking at M cars as well. A Z06 or ZL1 would be nice but I'm not quite sure I am ok with american interiors

All of these statements make sense.

Those two in particular have much nicer interiors than typical Chevrolet fare. ZL1 comes standard with a lot of Alcantara like stuff everywhere. The Corvette, if optioned up, can be pretty heavily covered with Nappa leather, Alcantara like stuff everywhere, and carbon fiber. Hardly any cheap plastic to be found.

Plus there’s the matter that either the Z06 or ZL1 are scarily faster than a 4 banger Cayman. Sound waaaaay better too.

I was originally looking at get an m850i because I test drove one and fell in love with the 8 cylinder and general BMW finish on the interior. VERY different than a 718 obviously. I'll have to check out the z06 & zl1. I think I would prefer a good interior and relative comfort than just balls to the wall 600+ hp. I assumed they'd be slightly better than the generic dodges and chevys I've ridden in (which were garbage interiors IMO). I'll definitely check some out in person

Boxsters have IMS bearing issues.......

I do not think thats an issue on these. My buddies warned me to avoid IMS porsches at all costs
