My God Daughter and five others were killed and 7 others were seriously injured in the Berkeley Balcony Collapse on 6/16/15. It has been determined that the balcony collapsed due dry rot caused by poor workmanship. Her mother is trying to have the law changed to make balconies and construction in general safer. If you agree, please sign this petition.

Link to actual bill? Annual balcony inspections sounds retarded. Sorry about your god daughter, but there don't need to be more laws passed to stop 100 people gathering on a really old balcony on somebody's private property.

This sounds like an insanely inefficient use of money to prevent a very small number of deaths. The same dollars could save a lot more lives eleswhere.

I am very sorry for your tragic loss, but if saving lives is the goal lets put a bit of thought into the best way to do it.

California Building Standards Commission would be better way to make changes in Statewide Building Codes. Their more knowledgeable to what chances will be required.

+1 on annual inspections being overkill. There is already trained inspectors. Private contractors inspecting balconies making improvements is a solution.

Tom, I have lots of love for you, as you know. But this belongs down in the sink and will probably get more action there.

Thanks for moving this TWT!

I normally would not even think of putting such a thing on BARF, but it means so much to the families involved. BARF is the only social media I'm involved with.

FYI, The building was about 7 years old and the balcony was professionally inspected less than a year before the catastrophic failure. Experts for the City of Berkeley and the families involved found that poor workmanship allowed water to enter the top floor balcony and because it was completely encased, top and bottom, inspectors failed to see the damage. They also stated that it was not overloaded. I was on-site while the City was inspecting the failure. They were pulling handfuls of rotten wood out of the side of the building. The rotten wood that was literally falling out like wet saw dust was what remained of some of the beams that supported the deck.

These Irish college kids had just moved into their beautiful top floor apartment in Berkeley and were spending their summers in California working summer jobs and enjoying themselves. They spent their summers together in different countries over the last couple of years, but for many, that ended in Berkeley Ca. The parents won't be satisfied with lawsuits, they want the laws changed to protect you and your family and friends. Oh, to make it even better, I understand that the previous tenants told management that the desk was tilting downwards and that it had mushrooms growing from the area between the stucco building and the concrete deck. Management failed to do anything about it.

I am sorry for your loss. But we have too many laws that aren't being inforced as is. We don't need any more feel good laws just to show that "we care and doing something".
