An on-duty San Jose police officer died following a traffic collision Tuesday afternoon.
Officer Michael Katherman, 34, was on patrol on a department motorcycle northbound on 10th street when he collided with a minivan at 4:22 p.m., Chief Eddie Garcia said at a late-night news conference.
The man driving the van heading south was attempting to make a left turn onto Horning Street when the vehicles collided.
A witness provided first aid at the scene and used Katherman’s radio to call for help. The officer was transported to Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
“He leaves behind a family,” said Garcia, who struggled to hold back tears. “We're very sorry for their loss.”Source
