Hello,

I am looking for a recommendation as to who or where I can take my bikes in order to get them safety wired and prepped to meet AFM rules?

I live in Santa Cruz county.

Thanks

I think most learn how and do it themselves. That said, there are many shops thar are capable of basic race prep. Any shop should be capable of it.

If you do it yourself make sure someone that knows what they're doing teaches you. I've seen some EXTREMELY poor stuff in the paddock. If you've got any aircraft tech buddies those would be the ppl to hit up.

Mach 1 motorsports can prep a bike for you. Those guys are good.

Depending on timing, I can show you how. I'm not interested in doing it for you; as was said, you should learn how, but I am willing to show / guide you through it.

For a local shop, try Richard (the mechanic) at "We All Ride". He's very familiar with how to do this.

Never used a jig, small drill press, a spring punch, good bits and a bit of oil. It can be done with a handheld drill but it is much easier with a press. Mark where you want to drill it with a sharpie, remove bolt/nut, mark with spring punch, drill it, re-install it, move onto next bolt.

Make sure bolts are at proper torque spec before marking and removing!

An alternative to drilling your existing bolts and nuts you can buy predrilled bolts and nuts from various sources like McMaster Carr. IDK for sure, but I would check with MR Metric in San Jose as they might have predrilled nuts and bolts.

That will cover most of the issues. The remainder is the oil drain plug and a few other items like that.

If you want to learn how to safetywire there are youtube videos or ask for someone to show you how.

I learned in the USAF and I can teach you. I also have a drill press so I can drill the oil drain plug but I am not so interested in drilling all your hardware for you. If we could work out a time, you are welcome to come over and you can drill out the hardware, as needed.

BikeBandit.com has predrilled aluminum & Titainum bolt kits. Buy a bag of bolts "brake kit" takes care of most of it...

Back in the day I also did it w/a good vice/punch/ & drills/drill. Can do the entire bike in an afternoon if your careful...

I just torque the bolts and use a hand held drill with oil and good, no really good drill bits. If you cant get to a bolt then you will need to remove it but you should be able to get to 80% of them with a hand drill. Dont be intimidated by it just go for it. Learn by doing. If you screw it up go buy a bolt, NBD.

Thanks everybody! Great information. I am also looking for specifics on what needs to be completed to my bikes regarding safety wire? I read the AFM rue book and its not to detailed. I want to make sure when i show up for the race, my bike is dialed.

Front and rear Axel, axel pinch bolts, caliper bolts(front and rear), oil drain plug, oil fill cap and radiator cap. Put some RTV on all the banjo fittings and on the screw to all your hose clamps and you should be good to go. If you have a GoPro it needs to be safety wired to your bike and put your number on the GoPro. If your gas cap is not locking it needs to be safety wired also.
