Riding with absolutely no gear on.

So I'm currently visiting family in Maui, HI. My brother took the only car into work this morning and I was starving at home alone. There was no other mode of transportation to get into town other than his Honda Ruckus. I was like, "Fug it!" and just took his Ruckus into town for food. My thoughts while riding with no gear on was fun! I was EXTRA cautious with everything I did. I will not make it a habit but only did so because I was hungry!

Has anyone ever had the opportunity to ride in another state with no gear on (Helmet especially)? How did you feel?

While on that topic, I seen a local riding his r6 with no helmet, barefooted with a tank and swim shorts on. Crazy.

What the shit is this...
I've ridden with no helmet twice, once in Texas and once in Utah. Definitely a weird feeling, knowing that ANYTHING goes wrong and I'm paying a nurse to wipe drool off my chin for the next 50 years.

I've also participated in the Vampires annual Naked ride (Helmets, boots, gloves, and nothing else) and that was an absolute blast. :ride :burnout

My first year of riding [age 19] I wore a novelty beanie and some cheapo leather gloves as m/c gear.
I was riding a cruiser and didn't know any better.
10years later I wore that novelty helmet again while camping at Laguna Seca for MotoGP on my DRZ-SM just to get around, knowing speeds will be low and I felt so naked and vulnerable!
Here in AZ is common to see people wearing just shorts, flipflops and sunglasses at freeway speed. I get goosebumps when I see them every time.

The wind noise at freeway speed is BRUTAL! I tried it once and didn't like anything about it.

I've never ridden without helmet and gloves, but I ride without other gear occasionally. If I go to the gym (which isn't very far), I'm wearing sweatpants, sweatshirt, and sneakers. I don't particularly enjoy riding like this with though. Feels weird.

I've done it for very short distances.

I've don't in around the pits on groms, pit bikes, etc... or when working on the bike at home (up and down the street, checking to see if you hear little noises)...

Oh and once in Cancun, Mexico (prob one of the worse places/times) 17yrs old on senior trip

I've done a loop in Mountain view in shorts, sandles, no gloves, ex helmet gear in order to heat up my chain ahead of cleaning. Felt crazy.
Funny thing I saw the other day .. I rolled up to a stop light, look over, and see a guy in shorts, crocs, and has a grocery getter bag hanging off of his clutch hand arm full of items... He's on a Ducati Corse 1199 .. So, light turns green .. There's a new cobra mustang up 3 cars and 2 lanes over .. who gives it a little rev.. The guy on the ducati immediately cuts across 2 lanes of traffic over in front of him and then Yutttt ugggh's it down the road .. I was shocked :wow but also :laughing:laughing. I sometimes want to troll just like him and let it all hang out. But, like you OP, i'm extra cautious when I do, I know it could be my last day on earth, and it feels crazy and stupid.. But sometimes, you gotta keep it spicy .. There's something in you that just compels you forward even after having acknowledged the risks.

Once at a party we took turns abusing Obs SV650. I think I was wearing open toed sandals at the time and no helmet. I was chided for being a dummy but it was fun at the time. :)

I've done the distinguished gentleman's ride in a dinner jacket (I had a back protector under my tuxedo shirt) and a half helmet.

Felt very strange.

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – A passenger in a moped that crashed into a dump truck Tuesday has died from her injuries, police report. I rode 150 miles on a CBR150 two-stroke with only a lid, bandana and jeans in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Had the time of my life going 50mph on the expressways there but keenly kept a safe distance and double checked my actions prior to initiating.

Just really depends where you are and what threat is real.

Around the block checking/testing out whatever mod or maintenance I've done.

Some people enjoy their 'freedom' of no gear. Definitely isn't for me.

Grew up with no helmet laws and few people wore them. Had a moped from 14-16 (50cc scooter) and never wore a helmet, but it topped out at 30. Got a helmet with my first "real" motorcycle several years later. Wore it most of the time but would occasionally ride without for short trips. Gotta say it was pretty cool hitting 100+ and feeling the wind smash into your face...not so cool when it was a bug :laughing

Growing up in less populated areas also meant there wasn't much selection, and modern helmets seem far superior, especially with scratch resistant visors.

Even here in TX, where you can ride without a helmet if you've passed the MSF and carry $10k+ in medical insurance (seriously), I would never go without... too many freakishly large insects in this state have pelted me in the past, and I KNOW I don't want them hitting me in the face.

Once in a while I'll ride to work without a jacket, but that's the extent of my non-ATGATT riding.

He's on a Ruckus. Freeway speeds are only possible if you've gone off a cliff.

Interesting scenario! I was only describing my experience of riding without a helmet, it had nothing to do with a Ruckus or free fall.

I've done it in parking lots to move my bike from one parking stall to a closer one. We're talking 100ft max. It doesn't feel right and as weird as this may sound, I actually feel "uncomfortable" being without any gear.
