Riding hoarder's mentality

With the air quality so poor, it gives me time to rummage through all my parts and toss stuff.

What do you all do with spare parts that come with farkles that you know you may never use (at all)?

Do you hang onto it? Do you just bin it?

Examples: Alternate screws/bolts for other models that come with aftermarket exhausts, levers, rearsets, etc.

Do you just chuck it or keep it in the thought if you ever wanted to resell it you have a full kit for someone else?

I have the ultimate propensity for hoarding when it comes to motorcycles and parts.

Just sold my TLR 200 Reflex today and handed over two big boxes of spare parts. At one point, I had nearly enough parts for two complete spare motors for my two stroke YZ250, three sets of wheels, spare forks, shocks, swingarm... the list is actually almost embarrassing. :x

I've an entire wall in my work shop with shelves filled by large rubber maid bins labeled for each bike I own at the time with spare parts. Tanks, subframes, exhausts hanging from the rafter. At least its organized and out of my work space. :gsxrgrl

I've been getting in the habit of starting to do an ebay sale once or twice a year and selling parts that are triplets.... no need for more than a single spare and only for things very likely to be needed in the near future. Have to draw the line somewhere. :laughing If it doesnt sell on ebay, it has no value and is either given to someone else or disposed of. Getting better... but still make exceptions and fall off the wagon frequently.

As for the extra hardware, that stuff is very useful. I keep two spare organizers for extra bolts, nuts, washers, fasteners. Come in very handy and just need to make sure you have someplace to organize and store them to be useful. At the bottom of a bin or loose in a drawer isnt such a place.

I bag nuts, bolts & washers by diameter & thread. For example I have an M6 bag that has an M6x1 and an M6x0.8 bag in it. It's useful to have an assortment of bolts around. Having a supply of fasteners on hand isn't hoarding.

If the bolts go with something I may need to install again, I might keep them bagged with the thing instead.

Right. :laughing

I have a whole drawer full of nails and screws and nuts and bolts and washers. But eight times out of ten I have to go to the hardware store for whatever I actually need because I don't have quite the right one in there.

I discarded any that seemed to be Whitworth. Should probably do the same for what SAE stuff I have.

Having metric stuff around is pretty helpful though. Some new, some used.

I have a bag of M5x16 T25 button-flange screws like you need for a BMW. The only place in the US to find them is a BMW dealer for quite a bit more $. If you replaced with the hex-socket screws you can buy locally, you'd need to replace 'em all, else start carrying more tools.

I also have a bag of well nuts. I see so many forum posts where people drop one into their fairing, and don't want to tear it apart to search. If they had them on hand they could ignore it.

I'm not hoarding.

I'm waiting for 'American Pickers' to stop by and cave to my demand of several hundred dollars for my tin/enamel Castrol signs and sparkle helmets from the 1960's.

i divested of my hoard of old goldwing parts when i moved the last time, because i didn't have any goldwings at the time.... i convinced myself i was cured of that addiction.

now, 3 years later i have a goldwing that needs an engine and the motherbitches are hard to find. the ones that ARENT seized are hard to find anyway

i too have several buckets of miscelaneous fasteners. i'll either sort them one day, or start making little sculptures out of welded fasteners and spare bike bits to launch an etsy store because it's a totally original idea!

I keep all the things.

I have a 7x16 box trailer that I'm using like a storage unit which is a testament to this.

I hold on to everything related to my bike until I move or need the space for something else. Then I toss them or give them away if they are useful. Within a year after that I find I need something I got rid of after holding onto it for years. Such is life.

I went through all my gear, had some I haven't worn in years. I just put an add on Craigslist free gear. Was gone in a little over an hour. Nice guy that had a bike but didn't have gear.

Yep, in almost every situation where I need a bolt, it isn't one I already have because the thread pitch is different or because I want it to be a hex head and not a rounded one.

It sounds like some of you haven't ordered a supply of shiny M5 & M6 bolts. That, along with good used bolts you collect over time give you a decent chance of having what you need. M4,8 & 10 are useful too, but maybe not enough to order in advance.

Sign up for a Grainger account, order all the things.

spare crews @ nuts.

Never get rid of your old nuts and bolts! I've got boxes labeled SAE/& MMs. They always come in handy. Even have some still from from my old RD days.
