RFR Reopening

I was at a concert on Saturday night and while waiting in line I overheard the conversation some guys behind me were having. Reno Fernley Raceway is getting a repave sometime in the spring, I think he said April, and going to reopen. I struck up a conversation with him and he said it'll be open to cars and bikes and told me to spread the word.

If any track day orgs are reading this PM me and I'll give you his number. Maybe we can get on the pavement before the cars and heat ripple it up again.

I've only ridden it once before it closed. I can't say I remember much about it other than the bumps in the braking zones and saying "WTF?!" to myself on the back straight where there were wild horses less than 100' away. Welcome to the West, I thought.

Hopefully it will be done right and the track will be run correctly so that it will be available for many years.

Always nice to have another track available!

Yup, that's the chatter that's been going around for many months now. I'll believe it when I see asphalt on the ground.

I believe they intend to lay down new pavement. I'm not confident that they are going to do the proper prep work on the sub base to prevent the track surface from going to shit again after one winter. I'm also not confident they intend to do anything about the shitty run off areas that have always been a problem out there.

Hoping for the best, but not expecting much, to be honest.

they have alotta asphalt to repave

who is funding this?

i find it kinda interesting since Sears point cant even generate enough marketing $$$ to do a repave and they host like nastycar/indy/nhra annually.

but 5 miles complete with a nascar bowl turn........sign me up, last time i went out there it snowed on track during am sessions

Last time I rode there (2012) the entrance to the bowl was so bumpy I had to stand up through the braking bumps! I'm a motocrosser though and actually loved that track:thumbup

The problem wasn't so much the cars and the heat as it was a horrible paving job. RFR was paved in three waves.

The first, which included much of the long straightaway, the esses and a loop back to the straight, was wonderful. It was done right and withstood the test of time. The paved the racing line and then out from there. You could head into the esses at speed into the tight turn 2 and it was smooth.

The second wave was messed up. It included a continuation to the bowl and an extension of the straightaway. They used overloaded pavers and didn't let it cure properly. It had many problems.

The third wave was the technical section, where you would turn right up the hill, go on a bunch of random corners and end up before the bowl. This was paved worse than the previous wave. There was no sense of flow (it actually flowed better backwards), the pavers were overloaded again, they were side by side which allowed for the seams to come apart and they didn't give it time to cure. This section was hopeless.

I don't know what it would take to fix it, but that main straight into the esses and the first buttonhook left was a thing of beauty.
