Renewed Outlook during SIP?

I have been buying a new bike every 3 years or so.. starting in about 02. Traded some in and sold a couple, but kept too many.

I am on the old side of the spectrum so I need to get this in now.. so riding more has been happening for about 5 years and this year was supposed to be a lot more with 5 rallies and several weekends. I have not bought a new regular ride in 5 years so I am planning on selling that one and buying new in '21.

I will do some longer rides.. for now probably just adding a few days to weekend trips, but I really want to do the whole western states deal.

Do you have your sights on what you'll buy in '21? I took a year off on my own accord two years ago and while not having much regrets in what I did with my time, I could've swung a couple more bike adventures.

Want to buy a new bike BMW S 1000 XR with LOW suspension. BUT there are none now and the factory is closed. :( Still going to try and sell the Multistrada while it still has some value. I may have to buy a "keep me riding bike" while I wait for the BMW. We should be leaving on a 3-day trip tomorrow but not this year. :mad A good friend is going to retire next year and wants to do Europe again, keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm eyeing the S1000XR as well. It is on my short list with a curious mind for the Yammy Tenenere 700. The XR exudes power while the 700 hints on exploration and nimbleness.

I'm observing the XR used market very dry right now.

I have pretty much decided on the V4 Multistrada. My CF wheels should transfer right over assuming they don't change stuff.

I like the Multi for its do a lot of things well aspect.

If you do not want a 2020, a big change from 2019 you may find a deal. BMW is giving $2,000 cashback on some 2019's.

I thought about the V4 but may be heavier and still will be high. I have a deposit down at a BMW dealer. They have a low suspension on order without a name on it. So I put my name on it. They are checking to see if anyone has one they can transfer. But if not I will get one when they start coming in after the factory restarts.

I used to work full time and got miss diagnosed with cancer. Now I work 6 weeks on/ 6 weeks off traveling the world half the year. Have I made any changes related to this mess, no. I already got my scare and made my changes. I always have 1 year financial reserves meaning this is more of an inconvenience than anything else.

I jump on a plane or my bike and can go anywhere in the world for half the year every year. The reason I can do this is I have eliminated all depreciation from my life. That means buying a used car and bike "right". I just bought a high end kitchen knife, yep a used knife. My watch again used. I have never bought a new vehicle and don't plan too. I live my life debt and depreciation free.

If I want a bike, car, watch, gun I buy it. But I buy used and I buy right. So when I sell it really hasn't cost me anything other than tax and insurance. It makes no financial difference if I spend XXXX on a toy as long as I sell that toy for XXXX when done with it.

I guess I think differently than most.

During SIP I've been doing a lot of maintenance on my 7 motorcycles. Geez, they were really a mess!

Like KTM 450 lower shock bushing, might as well put a new one in there, geez what a mess that was.

I am doing so much work I feel like I should not ride them and mess them up again. :)

But no changes on bike ownership, post SIP travel plans, etc.

I don't think a new mega dollar bike is my answer to happiness. For some it is. My 2 most fun bikes to ride happen to be the 2 cheapest ones I've bought.

Actually, I have a similar financial outlook as well. If I lose my job, I can support myself for 2-3 yrs without any gov't support or unemployment wages, hence my post. I've had about 6-7 cars in my life, all used. Sure some weren't too practical but I def. got my money back on the used market.

Same with my bikes. All used, I'd rather have 3 used bikes than 1 brand new for the versatility and options it could enable me (and fun factor).

But I posted because at some point, these savings will not be with us forever. Sure your relatives or next kin will inherit it but hey, you worked hard for it - why not splurge a little? In the last 3-4 yrs of bike production, I would say you are getting a lot more bike these days than what was offered in the past (power, suspension, electronics, brakes, etc).

That's interesting. What kind of work allows that kind of schedule?

Lots, I'm a nurse but I have met lots of guys doing the same from seasonal farm work(harvesting equipment owner), nurse working 2,13 week travel contracts and living the other 6 months with her family in Mexico, Md's, oil industry workers working off shore every other month, military contractors, teachers living abroad all summer, etc. You just have to think outside the box. I consider it lifestyle arbitrage. Work in the West making good wages, live where it's cheap spending little.

Yes.

I am not sure, but all those experiences definitely has concluded to having just one bike. My take on motorcycle riding has changed so much, getting older (I’m 45 now).

I’ve realized that there is not one bike that can do it all (except ADV bikes, but even those have limitations - albeit not many!) so there’s a LOT of compromise when having one bike. But I’m okay with it, and I think for those of us who have just one bike, kinda just accept that.

After I got my new-used SV, after a month or so I wish I would’ve got a V-Strom. Same motor, but just more of a “do-it-all’er”. They just look, so... old guy’ish. Like white New Balance shoes and relaxed fit blue jeans should come with the bike.

When I was in my 20’s with a brand new 1999 GSX-R 750 trying to be fast and doing stand up wheelies, I was bewildered (and thought it was kinda lame) to see “old guys” on ADV bikes, but also how agile and skilled they were. Now I kinda know why!

:laughing I just bought a V-Strom 650 in Feb and - full disclosure - love my old New Balance shoes. One bike to do it all for sure.

Realized my triple-redundant 300mile/wk commute setup is useless overkill during SIP. Took down the FZ1 for 100k service, much-needed deferred maintenance - filters, cables, hoses, valve shims, etc. The 2 Bandits are rotting away in the garage, I'll either need to get them started or drain the gas and go through the carbs soon. Realization #2, if I weren't commuting I could get by with one mid-displacement bike. No plans to change things up right now, I'm sure things will eventually return to normal and I'll get back to splittin' lanes 2 hours a day. Meanwhile finances are tight, my inclination is to stash whatever money I can and wait this out without unnecessary expenditures.

Yolo and was told that burying yourself with all your cash doesn't really let you enjoy it.

Unfortunately we haven't had as many fire sales on project toys just yet.
