I know this is not the garage section, but seeing all these people with vintage bikes I have a question. Due to reliability issues with 80;s regulators on Japanese bikes, can I put a modern r/r off a Hayabusa on a 83 gs 1100e my r/r crapped the bed.

Really common with this era GS, I was just talking to my buddy who has one of these and he was showing me his brand new fancy RR and wiring, I think there is some guy on the internet who makes a RR /wire tidy specifically for this bike. Next time I talk to him, I'll get the scoop.

Ask me about my B-1-D
a SH-775 Polaris r/r for ATV
Polaris pn #4012941

it is a series r/r which is supposedly less harsh on the stator than the shunt type r/r

under $100 last I checked

you really need to check out gsresources.com forums if you haven't already!!

The buddy I was talking about earlier was using a Polaris Atv r/r, probably the one mentioned above. Hope you get sorted.

I didn't get it sorted...I think the problem is my stator. When I rev the bike past 3 to 4 thousand rpms the volts stay at about 12.5 and I should be at 14.5 from what I understand. And if I let it idle for a long period of time it just dies and looses power. I cleaned ground and battery connections, and installed new r/r. The battery is a fairly new battery only piece left would be the stator. Debating on getting a Rick's stator, or should I go oem? I don't want to replace a stator every year like some other riders talk about.

the pig tail on the Rick's version is just long enough to reach the r/r directly, bypassing the oem harness goofiness

as I mentioned before, the wires exit under the back edge of the starter motor cover

It's confirmed, stator is toast....not even salvageable and get this stator cover is cracked in inside and brushes were rubbing against it. Now need to replace that relic as well. Hope to be on the road by next week, thanks for all input and answers. Went with a Rick's stator, and gasket.

I thought frequent stator failures only happened to Britbikes with Lucas electrics?

Check with my friend Dave Morgan at Cycle Psycho motorcycle recycling for a good used stator.

Update...I put in a Rick's stator and have a Ricks R/R and charging system is working beautifully, no more wondering if cycle will shut off before I get home or on long rides. What a relief, next mission is getting some Avon tires. Thanks for all the help and assistance in getting it sorted. This forum is a Godsend for novice wrenchers like myself.
