Need your help guys! I have read every page of this article and am still not clear on my situation... http://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=452429&highlight=Ducati+frame+sticker

Here's the deal... I'm still an IL resident, but I live in SF (I have an appointment with the DMV March 9 to change my license). I just bought a used 2010 Triumph Thruxton from a dealer in FL and it is being shipped here and should arrive the first week of March. So I need to do 2 things: get my CA license and register the bike in the state. The bike has 5200 miles on it; i know there is a 7500mi rule in CA.

My question is WHAT SHOULD I DO?! How do I get everything set properly/legally and in the right order.

Also, I've seen the DMV site and it isnt much help and getting anyone from the DMV on the phone is damn near impossible.

Thanks!

Is the 2010 triumph thruxton a 50 state bike? If so, you don't need to wait for 7500 miles, you just have to pay taxes on your purchase.

If it's not a 50 state bike and isn't already in the hands of the shipper, a simple solution is to ride it here, and then the mileage will be fine. If it is a 50 state bike nothing to worry about. Have you checked?

If you're moving here you can bring a bike you already own here. But you can't buy an "illegal" bike and register it here. You call yourself a resident of IL. Can you register it there?

You are not allowed to do that, and no reputable dealer will lie on the bill of sale for you.

Just call any triumph dealer give them the VIN and ask them to check the emissions status on the bike - they can look it up using the dealer computer system. If it's a 50 state bike - you're golden.

If it isn't you just screwed yourself. As in - badly. Without lube. The bike cannot be registered here unless your name was on the title BEFORE it left FL. As in - title issued by FL in YOUR NAME, not signed off by the dealer.

Don't forget to update the thread with the results of your VIN query.

Before you get freaked - _almost_ all of Triumph modern classics were 50 state bikes starting in 2005.

Register in IL at your parent's or a friends and then in CA in a few months.

You're allowed to bring in non-50 state vehicles under 7500 miles if you're moving com another state.

There should be an emissions sticker somewhere on the bike. If it says, "This vehicle complies with all federal AND CALIFORNIA emissions standards," then you're goid, just go get it inspected and registered. If that sticker doesn't mention CA specifically, back to square one.

Register it in IL before trying to do it in CA. If the bike is already in your name, the 7500 mile rule does not apply. Get it in your name first!
