Re-Keying Ignition Lock

Anyone have any recommendations? I'm replacing the ignition on my GPZ, since it's so worn you can pull the key out while the bike's running. Previous owner also hacked the bottom of it so it looks ugly, and new units are relatively cheap.

Would like to have the new unit keyed to match the rest of the locks on the bike (there's 4 others... 2 helmet locks, seat lock, and gas lock). Can bring key + new ignition into a shop no problem. Only place I spoke to wanted $50 per lock, which seemed a bit steep?

Unrelated, I also have two door locks, for my truck, I'd like to have rekeyed as well, that I've been waiting to do for quite some time. Would likely have this all done at the same time (assuming pricing wouldn't have me on beans and rice diet for a month).

Recommendations for South Bay would be best!

Really? For a 1/2 hr of skilled labor plus the toolset and other overhead?

Not like I know anything about locksmiths, but doesn't seem out of line to me.

I can't recommend a locksmith either, but if it were me, I would be calling every locksmith in the area to ask for an estimate of re-keying the whole set of locks that you've described. There must be somebody who can give you a better quote on the overall job rather than the per lock price, which is probably what they would charge for doing just one lock. And it ought to be a better deal if you're bringing all of the locks in.

There used to be a very good locksmith in Dublin that I always went to, but he sold the business a few years back, so who knows what's there now.

Can't you just re-key the new ignition to the existing locks? Only one re-key that way.

Schwenk lock and key (or something like that)
Across the street from valley fair on winchester.

You probably have to cut the lock portion of the ignition switch apart to access the mechanism. The free I have fiddled with of that era are swaged together.

Well I took the truck door locks apart myself and was able to rekey them myself... easy peasy. Both of them took no more than 30 minutes combined. Like I said, $50 each would have been really steep (IMO) for such a no-hassle job, but I'm happy I saved myself $100!

I'll take a look at the ignition when it arrives to see if it's as easy to rekey.

rekeying the other 3 locks on the bike might be easier. perhaps they don't even use all the tumblers on the key.
