We all wish we could have a life like his - full of daring and adventure all the way to age 97. He was never picked as an astronaut which was probably his biggest disappointment.

He's flown half way to heaven faster than anyone of his era.
Now his journey is complete.

Rolls with it...
His reputation has taken a couple of hits recently, but still a hero to me.

Godspeed.... thank you for your service and your heroism.

Condolences to his family and friends. :rose

No doubt his efforts had an impact on most of us whether we know it or not.

Saw some really cool old test pilot photos at the little coffee shop at Lancaster airport. The dudes of dudes from the air force used to go eat there. Amazing men.

A hero from the era when brave men were truly brave.

Absolutely, imagine getting into a plane to break the sound barrier with the strong possibility that the plane might break apart from the shock? Pure guts man, pure guts. Societies heros today are the likes of Zuckerberg, Dorsey and Bezos.

Recedite, plebes!
October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager flew the X-1 over Rogers Dry Lake in Southern California. The X-1 was lifted to an altitude of 25,000 feet by a B-29 aircraft and then released through the bomb bay, rocketing to 40,000 feet and exceeding 662 miles per hour (the sound barrier at that altitude).

Always have been and always will be a huge fan of his.

His WW2 fighter pilot escapades make him a hero.

His test pilot exploits make him a legend.

Godspeed sir.

I’ve been to Edwards AFB more times than I can count between 1983 and the present. I don’t know why it took me so long to actually take the time to stop in this corner of the flightline last year.

They put the X-1 in the pit, then towed the B-29 over the top of it to lift the x-1 into / onto its belly.

get it while it's easy
have a place in my heart for aviators. my great uncle was a navy test pilot. augered in on his last flight in an experimental aircraft. left a widow and 3 small children.

Rest In Peace Chuck. few ever know the freedom you felt with your wings of steel. :rose:rose:rose:flag

‘Early in the morning sunlight
Soaring on the wings of dawn
Here I'll live and die with my wings in the sky
And I won't come down no more
Higher than a bird I'm flying
Crimson skies of ice and fire
Borne on wings of steel, I have so much to feel
And I won't come down no more
Sail on, sail on
I will rise each day to meet the dawn
So high, so high
I've climbed the mountains of the sky
Without my wings
You know, I'd surely die
I found my freedom flying high
I've climbed the mountains of the sky
Floating on a cloud of amber
Searching for the rainbow's end
Earth so far below me, I'm here alone
Free, I can't come down no more‘ - borne on wings of steel

I got to meet Chuck Yeager at the Watsonville Fly-In in the late 70's. I was working security as a member of the Civil Air Patrol. This was shortly before my dreams of being a fighter pilot were crushed by my FAA physical. Yeager was the epitome of coolness to me back then, and I was thrilled to meet him and shake his hand. He was very gracious and accommodating. This world is poorer without him :(
