Quick question regarding front license plate on NA6 Miata

They are not legal, tinted or not.

There are covers I've seen a couple times that are basically a license plate frame with see though film over the registration stickers only, not the rest of the plate. They are to help discourage theft of the stickers. Those are legal. Other license plate covers are all illegal in California.
Yeah, I meant in Idaho where I now live. I know you can't cover a plate in California.

Mainly through paying attention to the LEO Forum for so many years and reading the writings of people like you, I have a very good understanding of the California vehicle laws. There's still a lot of stuff I don't know for sure in my current state.

Looks like it's illegal in Idaho as well.

...be in a place and position to be clearly visible, and shall be maintained free from foreign materials and in a condition to be clearly legible...

Something I've noticed on a LOT of vehicles lately is that they have meticulously removed the white paint from the plate, leaving the lettering painted - seems to me that is illegal also...

It is illegal.

They're removing the reflective material so plate readers can't read them.

Speaking of which, is there any truth to the "hair spray trick"?
I know that's more about Fastrak bridge cameras, but still curious if it works.. The plates that have been treated are so fucken obvious and the cars they are on usually have about 9 or 10 other violations.
