Quick question regarding front license plate on NA6 Miata

Long story short.
My NA6 has never had front plate since 92.
Seemed like no one cared (about this car not having front plate, even LEOs.)

2009 or so, I got ticket in San Francisco (while parked on Van Ness Ave, right front of Dainese SF store) by parking meter officer, for not having front plate.

I just paid the fine, and nothing happened since then.

Well, until Jan. 9th. 2020.
The ticket was issued (again) by parking meter officer.
And it was issued 6:42 PM, right front of the house I live. (In San Rafael.)

Okay, so it’s probably time, finally, to put a plate on the front of the car ...
(after 28 years / over 370,000 miles of driving around without one) ... I thought.

The problem is, ...

I can’t find the front plate.

In the last 1.5 year or so, I’ve moved twice.
I thought I put it into the storage, but I couldn’t find it.
(Strangely, I found factory front license plate bracket, still brand new,
from 28 years ago, pretty easily.)

I will still search the place I’m in now.

The question is,

1
I’ve read in Miataturbo net. or somewhere, that someone had the license plate scanned and printed by vinyl shop, and put the 1:1 scale of license plate decal on the front bumper and showed it to LEO after getting fixed it ticket. And it worked for him.
So, can I scan the rear plate (minus registration sticker part) and print out vinyl decal, put it on polycarbonate plate and mount it on the front. I’m pretty sure unless you look real carefully, you won’t be able to tell it’s printed vinyl.

2
The last time I had the ticket, I just paid the fine and din’t fix it. Nothing happened since.
Can I just pay the fine, then install printed vinyl license on front, then call it done.

Or, do I really have to have “proof of correction” ? (which requires $10 fee.)
(I know I’d have to, if it were fix it ticket issued by police officer. but this is a parking ticket.)

3 The reason I came up with the idea of scanning the place is because DMV will re-issue new set of front & rear plate.)
And it takes extra time. (about two weeks? I don’t remember exactly, but something like that.)

Now I have to go to work.

I’ll check out my place tomorrow.

#1: Many people put both plates together on the rear of the car and forget about it. Check there.

#2: As far as having a sticker for the front plate, they have to meet certain requirements, one of which is being retroreflective. Look here: https://licenseplatewrap.com/

I recently saw one for the first time (not my car). Sorry for the upside down images, I can’t be bothered to fix them at this time.

I'm 99% certain that my local dmv had stacks of plates in their desk drawer. Just bring in the old one with you to turn in.

I always stuck my front plate in the pouch behind the front seats. Yours is probably around the car somewhere, maybe same spot or another compartment, behind an easy access panel/carpet.

1) No, you can't just print your own plate/vinyl wrap legally. I've never heard of the link Enchanter provided, and I haven't looked into it, but they do claim to be a legal pilot program. Might want to check them out.

2) You can pay the fine on a fix it ticket and not have to fix anything. If the full fine is paid, the case is closed. The purpose is to get owner to fix illegal things, but that's how it works. It doesn't matter if it is written on a notice to appear ticket form or on a parking ticket form. It would be handled the same. You don't know if it was a parking enforcement officer or a police officer that wrote the ticket. And it doesn't really matter either.

Thanks everyone for the info.

I checked all the places and I still can’t find the front plate.

Spending any more time for searching would be a waste of my time, so,
I just go to AAA office or DMV office to get a new set of plates.
(And, most probably I will find the plate a couple of month later.)

Now, I remember that getting new plate(s) doesn’t take time.
(Personalized plates do. I was confusing myself.)
When I had to do that the last time (My S4R’s plate fell off because of vibration.)

So, taking care of this part is easy. I just pay the fine, don’t bother about
“correcting”.

I had series of minor troubles.
Waterbed (not mine, that belongs to the landlord) leaked, had to move everything out of the room, ripped the carpet and insulator open, let the floor dry, put everything back on.
Catching cold.
Couldn’t find my camera (Sony RX100), but I found it today.
And this parking ticket / front plate thing.

Riddle me this.
24002.
(a) It is unlawful to operate any vehicle or combination of vehicles which is in an unsafe condition, or which is not safely loaded, and which presents an immediate safety hazard.

(b) It is unlawful to operate any vehicle or combination of vehicles which is not equipped as provided in this code.

Story time! I wrote a girl for tinted windows. She paid the ticket, didn't take the tint off. I saw her again a month later, wrote her for tinted windows again and 24002(b), and told her I would take her to jail for 2800(a) VC if I stopped her a third time for it. She sold the car :rolleyes

2800 (a) It is unlawful to willfully fail or refuse to comply with a lawful order, signal, or direction of a peace officer, as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2 of the Penal Code, when that peace officer is in uniform and is performing duties pursuant to any of the provisions of this code, or to refuse to submit to a lawful inspection pursuant to this code.

So...go to the DMV, turn in your old plate, get new plates issued.

Dang, you must of really not liked her. I've never heard of anyone threatening to arrest someone for tint or lack of a front license plate. Was she really rude the whole time?

A front plate violation is one thing, but a tinted driver window can actually get someone killed. I support enforcement of that code every damn time.

There's consequences for not following the law, repeatedly. Jail was for refusing to follow a lawful order, not tint.

I'm curious why front tinted windows seem to be legal in Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona. Lots of cars from those three states have front windows so dark you can't see a thing inside in the middle of the day.

When those cars visit California are they still legal, even though a California plated car is not?

Cuz of.................................laws. :p

Dark tint is a safety problem. If you can't make eye contact, or tell if the other driver is paying attention / looking your way, that is a problem. Also a problem is the reduced visibility, especially at night. Finally, cops don't tend to like dark tint on vehicles (though many have it on their personal vehicles, including illegal tint) is that you can't see inside a vehicle when walking up on it. Someone could be drawing or pointing a weapon undetected. So people shouldn't really be surprised if officers are more likely to order them out of the car because of it.

It's always been my understanding that police can't enforce mechanical violations on vehicles registered out of state, if that state allows it in their vehicle code, like possibly tainted front windows or no front plate, etc.

Pretty much every state has window tint laws. Blacked out windows are illegal everywhere I could find.

ARIZONA
Application or installation of a substance or material that alters the color or reduces the light transmittance is permissible for a luminous reflection of 35% or less.

IDAHO
The front side vents, front side windows to the immediate left and right of the driver, and rear window may have a light transmission not less than 35%.

NEVADA
Non-reflective window tinting is allowed on the front side windows if the light transmission is at least 35%, with a tolerance of 7%.
https://drivinglaws.aaa.com/tag/glass-window-tinting/

Maybe they're just not enforced as often. This is 35% and is clearly not a safety hazard as it still lets a lot of light through.

As bojangle said, you can't enforce a law on a vehicle from a state where that law doesn't apply. My understanding is that falls under Congress's jurisdiction in regards to interstate commerce. That said, California also has 6700 VC, which basically says if you live here the car has to be registered here and has to follow CA laws. Or if the car is primarily used here, it has to be registered here and follow CA laws.

The biggest loophole is military, who are usually residents of their home state, and live on federal property (military bases) with vehicles primarily operated on federal property.

Pretty much every state has window tint laws. Blacked out windows are illegal everywhere I could find.
Thanks for the information.

So those with 35% are legal and the darker ones are breaking the law. Some time I want to ask a local police officer about license plate covers. There are way too many tinted ones around here, and I know those can't be legal.

They are not legal, tinted or not.

There are covers I've seen a couple times that are basically a license plate frame with see though film over the registration stickers only, not the rest of the plate. They are to help discourage theft of the stickers. Those are legal. Other license plate covers are all illegal in California.

Riddle me this.

Illegal, I always stop and cite those.

5201 VC - (c) A covering shall not be used on license plates except as follows:
(1) The installation of a cover over a lawfully parked vehicle to protect it from the weather and the elements does not constitute a violation of this subdivision. A peace officer or other regularly salaried employee of a public agency designated to enforce laws, including local ordinances, relating to the parking of vehicles may temporarily remove so much of the cover as is necessary to inspect any license plate, tab, or indicia of registration on a vehicle.

(2) The installation of a license plate security cover is not a violation of this subdivision if the device does not obstruct or impair the recognition of the license plate information, including, but not limited to, the issuing state, license plate number, and registration tabs, and the cover is limited to the area directly over the top of the registration tabs. No portion of a license plate security cover shall rest over the license plate number.

(d) A casing, shield, frame, border, product, or other device that obstructs or impairs the reading or recognition of a license plate by an electronic device operated by state or local law enforcement, an electronic device operated in connection with a toll road, high-occupancy toll lane, toll bridge, or other toll facility, or a remote emission sensing device, as specified in Sections 44081 and 44081.6 of the Health and Safety Code, shall not be installed on, or affixed to, a vehicle.
