It is ok to pay more for a bike that has had all of the maintenance work done to it recently, or pay less and get a bike that needs some work, but you must know this in advance and be ok with it.
    • Inspecting the bike: if you are not experienced yourself, have a mechanic or an experienced friend check the bike before making a purchase. Crashed bikes:This is even more important if you are buying a bike that is being sold at a cheaper price with damages that the buyer is required to fix. In these cases, doing a frame check that will show any frame/fork/geometry damages is HIGHLY recommended. Do NOT simply rely on the information that the seller is providing, even he/she may not be aware of all the problems. Have the crashed bike checked and know what you are getting into.
    • Clean title, Salvage title A clean title doesn't mean the bike is free of serious issues. A Salvaged title doesn't mean the bike may have any problems. Every case is different. Some bikes are seriously damaged in a crash, but an insurance claim is never made on them, so they still have a clean title. Some bikes have had mostly cosmetic damages in a crash, but the insurance company decided to pay off the bike and salvage the title rather than spending the money to fix it. Know what you are getting into and don't make any assumptions based on what the seller is telling you.
    • Registration: Know about the current registration status of the bike. Check with DMV if you have any questions about any possible back fees and other title/registration questions (out of state title, no title with bill of sales only, etc.) before purchasing the bike.

Q re: plugging 5.1 surround to my TV/DVD

I know this is probably a no-brainer, but I purchased a Logitech X-540 surround system and I figured I could just plug it into the digital/optical or analog RCA plugs on my TV and get some nice surround sound in my bedroom.

Well, the system comes and it has no optical input. It doesn't even have standard RCA inputs. It has 3 female 3.5mm inputs, marked "front, rear and center/sub." :wtf Well, I don't have OUTPUTS that match this. The best I can do is use splitters or adapters to somehow connect my LEFT and RIGHT RCA outputs (using 2 female stereo RCA plugs) into all 3 male stereo 3.5mm plugs... at least I think I could do that.. but, would it work properly? I don't want to blow a bunch of $ on adapters and end up frying the system or blowing speakers or something (I know, that is a worst-case scenario).

FWIW, the system comes with a "gaming adapter" that is 2 RCA plugs to a single stereo 3.5mm, but it did not come with directions.. which ONE of the inputs would I plug the 3.5mm plug into? I tried it, using the headphone jack on my stereo and it sounded like crap in all 3 inputs.

I have had no luck finding a "dual stereo RCA to 3 male 3.5mm plug adapter" and I have also been unable to find a male optical to 3 (anything) stereo outputs.. gee, wouldn't that make it easy?

So, any suggestions?

The surround system you bought is probably designed for computers, which often use the 3.5 mm jacks as outputs to the computer speakers. If you had a receiver with 6 channel RCA outputs on the back (usually for a pre-amplifier) you would be able to plug the speakers into that. If not, sad to say, you're probably out of luck.

The best bet for inexpensive surround sound is to buy one of the DVD player kits that include an integrated receiver and 6 speakers. This should accept optical and digital over coax audio from any other device you happen to have.

With your current setup, you'll never be able to get true surround sound. The best you'll be able to do is get a stereo signal playing using all 6 of your speakers. If you want to go this route, you'll need to get an RCA to 3.5mm adapter, and 3 3.5 mm splitters. Unfortunatly, I don't know how badly having that many adapters might effect your sound.

One final thing to keep in mind: the speakers you have are almost certainly amplified. If the RCA jacks on the back of your TV are designed for un-amplified speakers, plugging them into the X-540 may blow the Logitiech unit out. I suggest you check your TV manual for more information.

I may be able to offer more information. But to do so, I need to know your TV model, and whether or not you have any other equipment, such as a DVD player or cable box. Also, do you plug an antenna into the back of the TV? Or do you normally get your programming via another source?

EDIT: By the way, this thread may get more answers in the geek speak forum.

I just bought these the other day and they sound great! I have it set up in a loft where I don't want it to shake the pictures off the wall yet it sounds a hell of a lot better than the normal TV speakers.

You only need one of those inputs. The green one. Use a 2 RCA > 3.5 stereo pin adapter that came with it. If not, <5$ to get one. Plug the two speakers you have into the RCA adapter then plug your green adapter into the subwoofer. on the controller with the volume that came with the sound system, there are two buttons, the power button and the "Matrix" button. Press the matrix button. Sounds a ton better.

Its a cool sound system if your not looking to have the windows rattle but want more than the weak speakers from the TV. I like em.
