PSA.. Is your Heater, ready for Winter?

Good time to consider testing your furnace, heater, and/or fireplace, before the real chill of the season starts, just saying.

I have a 10 year old condensing furnace. Went out to fill the condensate trap this morning and fired it up. Toasty! I have a high efficiency air filter so no stinky smell with my warm air.

When the first chill of the season hits, Heating Contractors will be slammed and it may takes days or a week before you can get a Technician out. Also all the sham contractors will come out of the woodwork to rip you off. If a contractor tells you you need a new furnace, get at least three bids from reputable contractors. Get their contractor state license number and call or check the website for the contractor state license board. Three minutes of effort could save you thousands of dollars by avoiding using a contractor who is not licensed and or has many complaints filed..

cslb.ca.gov
Front page on the right is where you key in the license #.
You might consider checking their license before making an appointment, just saying.

Good call Bruce. I'll check mine tonight. I also have to figure out how to move my 9837569872857209 pound wood stove from the garage into the living room.

Postwhore stove moving party in Placerville?

I don't know if they still have them, but last time I was in an OSH going out of business sale they still had the moving dolly's.

Went without heat last year. I was thinking of rewiring one of those nichrome wire heaters to run direct off my solar panel, to take some of the nip out of the air.

I remember last year un-discombobulating the wiring on the furnace in my brother in law's new to him apartment.

That bastard hadn't been run in so long that I set off all the smoke detectors when I fired that puppy up.

Further cements my reputation as the backwoods brother in law from up north. "Nah, I can get this bad boy wired properly and fire 'er up this evening." [Smoke detectors blaring] :laughing

The original HVAC system lasted 28 years for this house. Just had it replaced about 1.5 years ago.

Thanks for the reminder, though. Filters are due to be swapped. The OSH .5 miles from my house is about picked clean, consumables like filters were the first things to go. So I went to HD about 5 miles away, through school getting out traffic and road work. Bought some sprinkler stuff to fix a geyser. Got home, noticed I'd forgotten the filters at the register :mad

I test fired the heater last week and could smell gas :(

The utility guy had come and given the system a thumbs up as far as gas leak was concerned. I am too concerned to fire it up again what with risk of gas poisoning and all that :wow

That reminds me I need to look into changing out the grate on the return for one that accepts a filter. The forced air unit only accomodates a 30 day filter :wtf

No it's a crappy gas wall unit that I hate using, I'd rather remove it and just use space heaters instead of having that ugly ass wall unit taking up the corner of the room.

agreed but gas is soooo much cheaper than electricity.

:laughing I set off the smoke detector in a Comfort Inn, the heat pump hadn’t been used in a while. It was in Orlando and a dive. We referred to it as the Discomfort Inn, after that.

The pleated type last longer and filter out most pollen.
