Plumbing Help: Whistling Toilet

About a week ago one of our household toilets began to emit a high-pitched whistle after flushing and just as the tank topped off. It whistled for 20-30 seconds at first, but now it's in the 60-90 second range.

It's a regular residential-type toilet, nothing fancy.

Any ideas?

What was the tune, and was it flat?

Sounds like the shutoff valve, actuated by the float rising, may have a tiny bit of debris in it. Give the whole thing a whack.

Sounds like debris stuck in the fill valve.
Some fill valves can be flushed.
Flush the flusher! and it might change its tune!

And it's a good thing I took another look. When I checked the tank earlier this morning it was whistling for a bit but the filling had stopped. Just checked it again and its filling at about half-flow continuously. Time to call the landlord.

Fear me!
I had the whistling/whining noise from one of our toilets a while back. I just replaced the whole flusher-water-shooter-thingy. I'm an expert so trust me :laughing

I used to do all the routine maintenance, but around ten years ago I developed a plumbing jinx and Mrs. nixed me from doing any more of that particular stuff. My bro-in-law is down for everything other than plumbing; he worked construction for years, and that was the only thing he really disliked and had bad luck with.

Time to call the rental agent.
