Don't forget the getting shot at by police. I'm honestly more afraid of that than any rioters or looters.

Apparently Walnut Creek is being swarmed again, right now. Boss just told us to go home. I go the other way but most employees live locally.

Shit. The violence came very close to where my brother and sister-in-law live last night. I just talked to my brother and he says that it has not reached their neighborhood yet today.

Just when you think it might be safe to breath again, here comes more trouble.

Right on, this is good advice. Keep it in mind, people.

Got stuck on 680 in Walnut Creek on Monday. About 40 minutes from 24/680 interchange to Monument. Protesters were walking between stopped cars. I was afraid that it could be a repeat of what happened in San Jose. Fortunately for all involved protesters behaved.

I was marching in San Jose yesterday. Hundreds, maybe a thousand people. Easily overflowed sidewalks into the street. 95% of the cars we passed (not very many) were beeping, cheering out their windows, encouraging. A small few looked annoyed as we passed. Nobody acted confrontational or angry.

I was there for 4 hours. We walked back and forth from City Hall to Cesar Chavez 3 times. There was no police presence. There was no unrest. It was a calm, peaceful demonstration. The final time we returned to City Hall, right around 8:30, there were police cars and several officers blocking the street ahead. We walked right up to them. I've rarely, in my life, been so scared of physical danger to myself. We paused. They stepped into single-file formations, leaving gaps between them. We walked through them. Some fist-bumps were had. I left after that. I think many others did as well.

What does it say that I, an upper middle-class white guy who's worst run-in with the law has been speeding tickets, participating in a 100% absolutely peaceful public assembly, was SCARED SHITLESS of approaching police officers? That, more than anything else, opened my eyes to what others are faced with on a daily basis. I can't imagine what it's like to be in one of the other cities where police are acting with less restraint.

I'd encourage anyone go exercise your right to peaceably assemble right now. Be an example for those places where demonstrations are met with bullets and batons.

Never thought I would hear rioting and Walnut Creek in same sentence.

Rioters and looters weren’t from WC. Five people that got arrested for looting Walgreens were from Oakland and Santa Rosa.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because you've recently watched videos of riots, not peaceful demonstrations, from around the country and that's what was on your mind when you saw the police.

Maybe because lately there's been plenty on instances of police being dicks to peaceful protestors. For instance, they thought it would be a good idea to use smoke grenades to disperse protestors in Clayton, and were shocked when people got angry and started throwing the smoke back at them. Teargas was deployed after that.
