Piercings!

Is it just me, or is the sink specifically excluded from the forum's search function? There's probably some previous threads on this subject but I cain't find em so blah.

I just got my first piercing-- 18g earlobes, the most basic. Went to Body Manipulations in the mission to have it done properly. I hate haaaate hate hate HATE needles, so I just sat there with my eyes closed the whole time, never even saw the nasty things, and that really helped. I'm still amazed I sat through it. :p I wanted pierced ears really badly for as long as I can remember, but my parents told me I had to wait till I was 12. They took me to the mall my 12th birthday, I sat down in the chair, they put dots on my ears, they got out the gun and I said... you know what? NOPE. Got up and left and only just now got the guts to go back. I'm glad I didn't go the mallgun route, knowing what I know now-- I think even though I was 12 I sensed that the person at the mall just was not taking the thing seriously, and this being semi-permanent mutilations of my flesh I was just not comfortable with that.

It's been about 7 weeks and they're still not healed-- not red or swollen, but oozing a teeny bit of greenish stuff when I clean them. I had figured this would be a good time to have them done, since my bike died and I haven't been wearing a helmet, so I'm a little surprised that they're still giving me trouble. I got titanium studs at first, but they were snagging very painfully on my pillow and blankets every morning so I got those swapped out for some little steel CBRs at week 4 or 5. It was early for messing with a jewelry change, but I'm very glad I did it since these do not snag. They tug sometimes, but not the nasty yanking I got before. I've been doing the sea salt soaks morning and evening, but the provon soap was setting off allergic reactions on the surrounding skin so I've finally given that a rest this week.

Weirdly, even though these aren't fully healed yet I find myself already contemplating additional ear add-ons. From the sound of it though, cartilage is a real bitch to heal (and from what I understand, inner conch can be seriously painful).

So, guys-- thoughts! How do you cope with ear piercings+helmet? How much harder does it make healing? How long after initial piercing should a person wait before going to the next bigger gauge? Any suggestions, anecdotes, show off cool pics of your stuff, and so on!

The earring on one of my lobes snagged on the collar of my shirt a few days after I got my lobes pierced when I was 6. Ripped the lobe pretty badly, but after that I've been really careful pulling things over my head. Haven't had any snags on any of my lobe piercings since then. :D

I did get my first cartilage piercing last year March. A couple months later, I forgot about it and was trying out a helmet. Hurt like hell, and I think it caused the piercing to become infected for a little bit. It still gets crusty and I've been having a hell of a time getting the bump to go away and STAY gone, even with the SS soaks. :[

I don't really find any problems with helmets and lobe piercings though. I was riding the day after I got my most recent ones, although I have noticed that it's taking longer than the ones before them to heal up. But that might just be because I've been lazier with cleaning.

Yep, the Sink is NOT included in searches, in order to protect the guilty from their PUI highlights. (self included)

Thats all I got, as I have no piercings :cool

Hai Gnarly! I had my ears pierced as a kid so they're all healed up. I generally don't wear jewelry under the helmet as it can be uncomfortable. If possible let the ears heal up and take off the jewels to ride. I hope that helps. I do know others who ride with earrings but this is what works best for me. :)

I had 5 earrings and 1 lipring in the 80s/90s. They've all closed up.
I can imagine how they would snag on the lining inside the helmet.
I've seen people wear a head sock.

i had 1" 1/8" gauged ears..... they ruptured on the inside of my ear blew my ears out, i took em out now i have droopy saggy cat butt ears. i would take my gauges out when i put the helmet on because my gauges were so big it would hurt my ears.

7 weeks sounds about right for something that's been tugged on a lot and where you had an allergic reaction involved - especially since it sounds like you're close to the end. Your body may not have enjoyed healing around the Ti either.

Keep up the regimen, you're almost through it.

I got pierced all in the same sitting from 18g>10g>6g>2>

that pain was fucking excruciating. I picture it like male childbirth ...out of my ear.

A balaclava will help keep them from snagging, but the rubbing of the helmet tends to slow down the healing process quite a bit. Keep them clean and have patience...

I've twice had earrings ripped right out, both times dancing with a lace-glove-clad lovely. It ain't pleasant, but it was drop-t-the-floor pain, either. Then again, when I'm in the right mindset, pain is pretty subjective (both times we were at BaGG).

Got my tongue done a couple of years ago, on a lunchbreak. Should NOT have driven back to work, as the endorphin rush left me pretty goofy. Within a couple of weeks I was looking to get more piercings, but that was just the addict in me talking. :teeth
