People can search for you online...

Hey folks...my friend posted this on Facebook and freakin A....people can search for you and find out what youve been up to! Its like one of those yellowpages-thingy that tracks down your email and online life and whatnot. I tried it and i found myself on Myspace (which I recently deleted). Spokeo.com is the site and yeah, check it out yourself. Pretty scary on what sites track your info...:(

Im wondering how many of you BARFers can find yourself on that....

I just ran my own shit across there, and it's old news, like 8-10 years. I guess I'm operating under the radar. And I'm not even trying to.

my name returns about 10k results, but what was spooky was querying my home phone number. Showed Google Streetview of my house, with both my cars in the driveway and their license plates...

The removal process was easy enough though

Towelhead extraordinaire.
Thankfully I don't have a very unique name, so I just blend in with the rest of the internet.

Wow, it even had my wife's name. Kinda creepy, but not surprising. We really don't have any privacy anymore. As long as it doesn't list my SSN or my bank account #, I could care less.

They really can't do anything with your bank account number. Plus if you ever write a check it's right on there.

Spokeo had a lot of my relationship status and what not wrong.

It says I have kids, when I don't. It says I'm married, when I've never been.

Anyways, I removed my ass from there!

Can I be....frank?
Half the male Barfers already had their info online via the sex offender registry. :laughing

How did you do that?

Edit; nevermind found it, and my info was also incorrect.

8. How do I remove my information from Spokeo’s search results?

Spokeo respects your privacy, and you can easily opt out of Spokeo’s public search if desired. Please note that since the information aggregated by Spokeo is publicly available, opting out of Spokeo does NOT remove the information from its original sources, which are hundreds of additional websites. You can remove the search results derived from performing any Name, Reverse Phone or Reverse Email searches here.

To remove your Name/Phone/Email Listing(s):

1. Locate the listing to remove (for name listings, please select the state, city, then exact profile match)
2. Copy the URL (the URL can be found on the top of your browser and should look something like "http://www.spokeo.com/search?q=Smith%20Sample#Sample:1219812367")
3. Go to www.spokeo.com/privacy
4. Paste the URL
5. Provide your email address (this acts as a verification process for the confirmation to be sent to your Inbox) and Captcha Code (Image Verification Code)
6. Check you Inbox for the confirmation email, and click on the link on the bottom to complete the removal process.
7. The directory listing will become flagged and will be removed within 1 business day.

If you are seeing any error messages, please see below for the solution to some common issues:

the people search finders have me well off the radar with contact info that's at least a year out of date or flat out wrong, but a google search gives accurate links to my photography business, my twitter feed, and some other relevant information.

You can have a pretty private life online by having some easily accessible info and have that be the sacrificial lamb that all the search engines cling to, while the rest of your sordid details remain hidden.

Removing your name from spokeo may not work 100%
Our advice here is similar to what we wrote in response to concerns about ZabaSearch several years ago: Spokeo does have a privacy policy that allows you to request that Spokeo remove your listing from public searches, but it's important to understand that even if you block your Spokeo listing, your personal information will still be available through the underlying sources used by Spokeo. Those third-party records will still exist and will still be publicly accessible, so the same information provided by Spokeo will still be available to others, either working on their own or using information aggregators similar to Spokeo:
You can remove your Spokeo listing from public searches for free. Please note that removing your Spokeo listing from public searches does not remove your information from the third-party data sources. Your information will still be shown on other people search sites, and you will need to contact those third-party sites one-by-one,
In short, removing your personal information from display by Internet aggregators isn't a one-time deal, but rather more like a never-ending game of Whack-a-Mole: You might swat down an aggregator site or two, but more of them will inevitably pop up.

NOTE: By running some trials with Spokeo, we've found that:
The information returned to paying customers through Spokeo searches is not very detailed and is often inaccurate.
Our repeated attempts to request the blocking of a particular record through Spokeo's privacy page have found the procedure to be highly questionable: no attempt is made to verify that the person requesting the blocking of a record is the person identified by that record, our efforts have never resulted in a successfully blocked record, and Spokeo's customer service group did not respond to any of our inquiries.
Attempts to initiate record blocking are frequently met with error messages claiming that the provided e-mail address is invalid or that "in order to prevent abuse, we must limit the frequency of privacy requests."
All of this has led some to speculate that one of Spokeo's core businesses is actually collecting e-mail addresses or pushing sales of privacy services.
